I am not sure how compelling the Omnia is since it is rumored that Verizon will be releasing the VGA-HTC Touch Diamond in the future but the WQVGA Omnia was spotted in the wild over at
Engadget Mobile. Hopefully a release is imminent. The 8 GB version with a 5-megapixel shooter will be available by year-end. This pits the Omnia against the
LG Incite on rival AT&T.

Pocket PC Central, the device is now available through the
Verizon Wireless web store, with retail availability coming soon. The Saga is available for $200 after a two-year agreement and post-rebates.

A member of Palm's technical support staff has posted
some information to the Palm.com support forums with additional details on the newly-released
Verizon Centro 1.03 ROM update. The Palm tech support staffer "HardBeatZ" goes on to list the specific improvements made in the new Centro ROM as follows:
Specific enhancements:
The first is to add an error message when there is "no service" and a call is dropped if applicable.
Here is the technical explanation (Palm has added software support where if service is lost immediately after origination, modem disconnects the call with "no service" error which is not handled as an error. So no UI is displayed. This was fixed by adding in a handling code of "no service" call disconnect as an error.)

It looks like if you're buying a smartphone from Verizon Wireless on or after November 14, 2008, you will be forced into buying a data plan of $29.99 or higher. According to
Engadget Mobile, there is confirmation in a Verizon Wireless document that says that Pay As You Go, 10 MB data plans, and 1X Block won't be available to smartphone users when the new data policy takes place. Now, if you want a smartphone for PIM management features only, you may find yourself adding wireless data features that you may have not considered previously.
Wireless carriers have been looking for ways to capitalize in the industry as many people already have cell phones with voice coverage. With the rising popularity of smartphones, this may be just Verizon's tickets, although there is bound to be a few unhappy customers who have a smartphone for other smart features but not for web browsing, mobile email, or web applications.

Verizon Wireless is going to have a killer November if launch reports are accurate. Not only is the carrier going to be launching the BlackBerry Storm, the first touchscreen device from Research in Motion, but three new Windows Mobile devices will also make the list.
First up is the HTC Touch Pro, the QWERTY slider that has hit Sprint and will soon arrive on Big Red. Phone Arena has it dubbed the Verizon Wireless XV 6850. From Samsung, we have the Omnia, the slab iPhone/Storm competitor. Also from Samsung, we'll see the CDMA version of the Epix. On Verizon, this candybar phone with a QWERTY keyboard a la the Palm Treos will be called the Saga, codenamed i770.
Shown in the photo below is the Saga from Samsung. Other phone model pictures could be seen at

After much speculation as to what the
Omnia will be called once it lands on AT&T, there is now speculation that the Omnia will launch on Verizon Wireless' EVDO networks. According to
Electronista,a rebate form for Big Red shows an Omnia-variant. The rebate is good between October and mid-November, suggesting that a release could be imminent.
The Omnia can be a device that will help Verizon Wireless from losing customers to AT&T. Since the launch of the iPhone 3G, it is said that 30% of iPhone users who were defectors came from Verizon Wireless. The Omnia is seen as a competitor to the iPhone in terms of design, features, and a consumer oriented approach as Samsung had added its own Widgets interface to the device.
Although the rebate form indicates a time range, Verizon Wireless could delay the device last minute.

Just when it looked as if the late summer crop of "free" Verizon Centros from Best Buy was the most attractive way of getting into a new

We all knew it was approaching, but brace yourself, the storm has made landfall. Tuesday night, Research In Motion and Verizon Wireless officially introduced the first touch-screen BlackBerry to the world: the RIM BlackBerry Storm.
Also known by its code name, BlackBerry Thunder, the Storm features a touch-sensitive display that's unlike that on any other touch-screen smartphone available today, thanks to RIM's own twist (more on this below). There are plenty of other highlights as well, including dual-mode functionality, support for Verizon's EV-DO Rev. A, integrated GPS, BlackBerry OS 4.7, and more.
Now, before you run out to the nearest Verizon store, we've got some bad news. Unfortunately, you won't be able to get your hands on the BlackBerry Storm quite yet (groan). A specific release date and pricing were not announced, but Verizon said the Storm would be out by the holiday season with "competitive" pricing. Obviously, we're not fans (and we're guessing you're not either) of such vague answers, especially in light of the RIM BlackBerry Bold delay.

LTE, the fourth generation wireless protocol that is to replace 3G networks, has been tested in a moving vehicle in Bonn, Germany by T-Mobile and Nortel Networks according to
Reuters. Also known as Long-Term Evolution, LTE will be adopted in the United States by AT&T and Verizon, with Sprint opting to go with WiMax for its fourth generation wireless network. The test achieved up to 150 Mbits per second for download and up to 50 Mbits for upload on moving vehicle speed of 67 kilometers per hour.
T-Mobile Germany has not committed to LTE for its network upgrade and is testing various options, with a decision to come in six months time. Nortel is predicting that up to 80% of the world's wireless carriers will adopt LTE for its fourth generation networks, with the remaining 20% to use WiMax.
It will be awhile longer before AT&T and Verizon start testing out their LTE networks. According to
Gizmodo, trials won't begin until 2010.

If you are a big fan of the
Samsung Omnia, FCC documents have shown testing for an AT&T and Verizon version. Although FCC testing and clearance does not necessarily mean that the carriers will release their versions, it does show some promise. There has been rumors that AT&T will pick up its version of the Omnia, dubbed the i907 as AT&T Samsung models typically end with a 7. Verizon Wireless will be picking up the Omnia as the i910, which will operate on that carrier's CDMA/EVDO network according to
SlashPhone.

Engadget Mobile just got a hold of some documentation showing that the i770 is due out in Q3 (bottom), which corresponds to
what was leaked back in June regarding this device (top). If it is indeed a CDMA version of the
i780 as we suspect, expect it to have a nice 320x320 display, plus the specifications you see listed there.
While the i770 lacks visual appeal (it looks like a plasticy toy), we're always happy to welcome more candybar QWERTY phones to the party.

The version of the Touch Diamond headed to Verizon sometime in September/October will be quite different than the
original Touch Diamond. For starters, the processor will clock in at 400MHz instead of 528MHz. In addition, instead of 4GB of inbuilt ROM, the Verizon variant will only get 256MB but will sport a microSD expansion slot for added memory. The battery has been bumped from 900mAh to a much better 1340mAh, which has increased the width from 11mm to 14mm. With these changes to increase the expandability and battery performance, it will become a more appealing device to business users than was the original.

It looks like the world may in fact be closer to a fourth-generation wireless networked world phone than previously thought. Vodafone, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless, among others, have already committed to the LTE protocol for next-generation voice and fast data connections. Now, regional carrier MetroPCS has also announced its intentions to adopt LTE for its fourth generation infrastructure, according to
Engadget Mobile. MetroPCS will be aggressively building out their LTE system, a task which may be easier for a smaller regional carrier with a smaller footprint than mega-carriers like AT&T and Verizon Wireless in the United States.
MetroPCS already offers competitive voice, data, and messaging packages on its footprint. The only problems are that you have to live in an area that MetroPCS services and that you are limited by the devices offered by the carrier at the present.
Hopefully, the carriers can establish affordable roaming agreements to blanket more areas and provide world phone services for those frequent flyers.

Just when the
long-winded saga of the
Treo 700p seemed to have become a distant memory, Palm has quietly released two new ROM updates for the Verizon version of the 700p and the
Alltel 700wx.
Palm has quietly released a (presumably) final ROM radio update for the 700p, over two years after its release in May 2006. Bearing ROM version 1.11, this update is said to fix "
a phone reset issue that occurs under certain specific and rare conditions". Users running the original 700p 1.06 ROM will first need to update to 1.10 before running the separate standalone 1.11 installer. Both Hotsync & SD card-based versions of the installer routine are available for download. An Alltel-specific version of the update was made available in June.

According to
Phone Arena, there will be slight differences to the offerings of America's two largest CDMA carriers. The
Touch Diamond will appear as the
Sprint Victor while Verizon Wireless will retain the Touch Diamond brand.
Phone Arena notes that the most significant differences to both the Victor and the Diamond offered by the competing CDMA carriers will be:
Sprints variant runs on Qualcomm 7501A chipset with 528MHz processor, 256MB ROM, 256MB RAM and 4GB internal memory. Verizons runs on Qualcomm 7500 chipset with 400MHz processor, has half the RAM (128MB) and has microSD cards slot instead of 4GB NAND flash. Sprints Victor will have an accelerometer (Motion G Sensor), Rev.A straight out of the box, and aluminum frame. Verizons Diamond lacks the sensor, is Rev.A upgradable and has stainless steel frame. .
It boils down to the Sprint's model has more RAM, built-in storage, accelerometer, and a slightly faster processor. Verizon eschews the built-in storage for a memory card slot, has a slower processor, less RAM, and no motion sensor.
The Touch Pro will be more or less the same as its keyboard-less counterparts. Sprint's model will be named the ...

Despite
appearing at the tail end of 2007, over six months after the device's debut on the Sprint network, a Verizon spokesperson has confirmed to PalmInfocenter that they are "phasing out" the Treo 755p in favor of the
newer Centro. The
Treo 755p is becoming increasingly scarce at Verizon retail outlets, with many having already removed their display units. The price of a new 755p on Verizon's online store has also been drastically reduced (after rebate) to match the Centro's same $99 pricetag (with 2yr contract). However, checking stock online, both as a new activation customer and an existing customer up for renewal, indicates that Verizon's 755p remains out of stock and has been so for several weeks now.
Finally, Palm has traditionally issued some sort of ROM update for their devices before the gradual EOL process begins. It happened with the Treo 600, 650, 680, 700p and 700w, so the recent appearance of the Verizon 1.08 ROM update is another solid indication that the device has been updated to the satisfaction of all parties involved.
