Verizon Treo 755pPalm has posted the first ROM update for the Treo 755p on Verizon. The update brings the device up to version 1.08. The update support page is pretty vague on specific details stating only:

This software update is a tune-up that improves the phone application, stability and device usability.

The update is only for use with a Verizon 755p. Palm Support says the update should take roughly around an hour to complete. The usual backups are recommended. Installers are available for all versions of Windows and a expansion card method is provided for Mac OS and other systems.

If you're on Sprint or Verizon Wireless and are itching for the Touch Diamond, you're in luck. The Touch Pro is essentially the Touch Diamond that was reviewed at pocketnow.com, but with a keyboard, similar to the TyTN II that it is to replace.

According to Engadget Mobile, the device is going through FCC certification for use in the US. The model name is RAPH800.

The model that is going through FCC approval will be using CDMA technology with EVDO for high speed internet access. If AT&T or T-Mobile decide to adopt this model or the keyboard-less Touch Diamond, a separate FCC filing would need to be made for the approved GSM frequencies needed.

Verizon Wireless' Decoy, made by LG, sure does make the "Life is Good" motto ring true. The phone isn't a smartphone and doesn't even have a QWERTY keyboard for text and email maniacs, but it does have other niceties that make the decision to go with a feature phone, which is a non-smartphone, easier.

At first glance, the LG Decoy looks like most other slider phones with a tactile number pad, hard buttons on the phone's surface, and a joystick for navigating the menus. It has a glossy silver front that makes a nice mirror finish with a matte back that adds a rubberized grip with a blue-ish purple tint, not unlike the material used on AT&T's Treo 750 by Palm.

I will post more impressions in the coming days. Calls went through great. The Decoy's call to fame is the detachable Bluetooth headset that makes it harder to loose your headpiece and you'll always be within reach of a handsfree accessories, especially with tougher driving laws like that coming to the state of California. Menus were easy to navigate and the Decoy has an email feature for those that need to check email ...

Verizon Treo 800wRumor: A purported Sprint internal upcoming inventory document posted on HowardForums shows a July 13th general availability date for the long awaited and oft-rumored Treo 800w. The inventory sheet states the 800w will be available on July 9th for BP (Business Partners?) and on July 13th in all other channels. It also lists a $599 unsubsidized price. Read on for the screenshot.

The document also confirms the basic specs that regular readers will all have memorized by now including: Windows Mobile 6.1, EVDO Rev A data, WiFi (with a dedicated shortcut button), GPS functionality and 128 MB of built in memory. We recently posted a full list of Treo 800w specs here.

Since visual voicemail debuted on the iPhone, a number of third party voicemail solutions exist, including those that transcribe voicemail and deliver the voicemail files to a user's email inbox to be played later as a .wav or .mp3 attachment. Now, Verizon Wireless is following the visual voicemail bandwagon by offering a downloadable application that will enable select non-smartphones have access to visual voicemail.

Engadget Mobile reports that the Verizon Wireless solution will be available for download on the LG Chocolate 3, the Voyager refresh, and the Motorola Blaze and Utopia initially for $1.99 per month.

Visual voicemail is a feature that enables users to scan and hear only select voicemail messages without having to listen to every message, similar to scanning and reading emails.

TreoCentral has uncovered a set of Palm internal training slides that detail a number of upcoming rom updates. The most surprising detail is plans for a soon to be released Windows Mobile 6 Professional OS update for the Verizon Treo 700wx. Incidentally, minor dot updates will also be coming to the Verizon Treo 755p and the Sprint Centro, though no details on these were included in the slides.

The Verizon Treo 700wx Update v1.24 is listed as coming this "Spring and Summer." It will be a free update and only be compatible with the 700wx. It is unclear from the limited details if it will be WM 6.1 or the older WM 6.

Businessweek has posted an interesting new article about Palm that, while retreading some old ground, manages to offer a few interesting new tidbits regarding the company's battles to maintain and gain market share. Palm has struggled somewhat against a slew of competitors, Apple and RIM chiefly, but the popular new entry-level Centro smartphone continues its momentum after nearly nine months on the market. The Centro's arrival Verizon Wireless now offers Palm another strong outlet for the CDMA version of their market's most affordable touchscreen smartphone.

The most interesting new factoid to be gleaned from the Businessweek piece is a quote from Lehman Brothers analyst Jeffrey Kvaal. Kvaal states that Sprint, long Palm's primary carrier of choice for new smartphone introductions, has Centro demand that "remains healthy". However, sales of the slower GSM/EDGE version of the Centro on AT&T Wireless' network are only "mediocre". This can likely be attributed to the inherent data speed shortcomings of the Garnet OS on GSM networks, as well as the presence of several strong competing devices on the AT&T network. While the new entry-level Centro smartphone is not marketed as an iPhone killer for Palm, the ...

Centro VersamailCoinciding with the Centro's launch on Verizon Wireless, Palm has quietly introduced a new cut-down version of their VersaMail e-mail client. This new release of VersaMail is designed specifically for the new Verizon Wireless version of the Centro and the device's corresponding $29.99 unlimited smartphone data plan. The new release, entitled VersaMail Personal Edition, is an optional download alongside the existing standard edition of VersaMail for new Verizon Centro owners. VM PE lacks Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) support but is otherwise identical to its full-featured sibling.

Palm differentiates the two versions of VM by Build 104 (Personal Edition) and Build 103 (VersaMail). Palm's support page detailing both the differences between the two versions of VM can be found here. The page also offers step-by-step instructions for downloading the VM installer from the MyCentro portal app.

Verizon Palm CentroPalm and Verizon today announced the official availability of the Palm Centro smartphone on Verizon Wireless. The Verizon Centro debuts in "Cobalt Blue" for $99 with a two year service agreement and $70 mail-in rebate. Data plans begin at $29.99.

The Palm Centro runs Palm OS Garnet v5.4.9. It has a 320x320 pixel touchscreen display, Bluetooth v1.2, a 1.3 megapixel digital camera with video capture and 64MB of memory. Verizon's Centro appears identical to the earlier leaked images, clad in a dark metallic "Cobalt" blue with the same metallic sparkles seen in the Sprint versions. For memory expansion it has a microSD slot. You can find our original Centro review here.

Verizon Treo 800wRumor: After last week's flurry of leaked Verizon Treo 800w images and further Sprint release date + pricing info, some concrete specs of Palm's next Treo have finally come forward, courtesy of this TreoCentral forum post.

The Treo 800w's feature set does look to be almost completely mimicked by its trendier, smaller, and later-arriving GSM sister device, the Treo 850. The earlier pre-production leaked photos and specs of the 800w are a close match to the device's production appearance.

Blue Verizon CentroRumor:After debuting last October on Sprint, the Verizon version of the Palm Centro looks set to finally hit the market. The Centro's delayed-but-anticipated arrival on Verizon comes over four months after the previous release of the GSM Centro to various carriers worldwide.

Engadget Mobile is reporting that the Verizon version of the Palm Centro is rumored to be in store for an imminent release on Friday, June 13th. Verizon's late appearance at the Centro party is nothing new, as the CDMA giant has almost always lagged behind other carriers in offering the latest handsets, with Palm OS-based smartphones nearly always appearing on Verizon six months after their Sprint launch.

The standard on-screen keyboard for Windows Mobile Professional wouldn't be adequate for the Touch/XV6900 - a device that encourages you to use your fingers instead of the stylus.

That's why HTC has included two new keyboards: the Touch Keyboard and Touch Keypad, the former being akin to the SureType keyboard found on the BlackBerry pearl, and the latter being akin to the TouchPal keyboard, which uses a T9-like keyboard, among several others.

The keyboard and keypad work generally well after a bit of practice. Unfortunately, they cover a large portion of the screen when open.

Oh yeah, the HTC Touch Diamond adds three additional keyboards, not just two.

Verizon Treo 800wRumor: Engadget Mobile has posted a new leaked slide deck from Verizon, which among other things, reveals some details about a Verizon Treo 800w release. The slide shows a Verizon branded 800w in the same style as the previous leaks and photos and shows a presumptive "Q3 2008" launch timeframe.

The few specs that are posted on the slide mostly matchup with previous information. Noteworthy is the listing are bullet points confirming the inclusion of 802.11b/g WiFi, a microSD expansion slot and a rather low-end 1.3 megapixel camera. 1xEvDO & Rev-A, 256 MB Flash / 128 MB of RAM, Bluetooth (with A2DP) and Windows Mobile 6 are also on board. Read on for the full slide.

The soon to be released Verizon i770 is reported on Engadget Mobile. From the looks of things, it is a candybar QWERTY that runs on a touchscreen Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional platform, much like the European release of the Samsung i780 but without the trackpad. Instead, Verizon's iteration will come with a traditional directional pad. The i770 is like the Palm Treo 800w mixed with a little Samsung BlackJack/Samsung i780.

The device will feature GSM for global roaming, although it will operate on CDMA/EVDO for US operations. Along with Bluetooth, WiFi, GPS, and 256/128 RAM/ROM, this will be a great addition to Verizon's smartphone lineup.

The device is said to be launching in the third quarter.

The XV6900 isn't a typical Windows Mobile Professional phone. It adds several enhancements to make touch-operation a bit easier, or, shall we say, more like the iPhone.

Those that have been spoiled by the fantastic flick-scrolling of the iPhone will find that of the XV6900 to be just mediocre. It's not terribly accurate, it doesn't move fast enough, and the sensitivity could be better (though sensitivity has to do with the type of touchscreen). You can use the flick scrolling in several places: contacts, calendar, PIE, photo/video gallery, messaging, and the Start menu.

I really like the photo and video gallery (much better than the default), but found the zoom/pan gestures to be difficult to use.

The Verizon XV6900 is quite a refined device, with a flush touchscreen (rare for a Windows Mobile phone), plus a minimalist design with just two buttons on the front in addition to the D-Pad. Though the phone is all plastic, and thus a bit cheap feeling, it's also lightweight.

The placement of the microSD slot is silly - requiring the user to remove the back cover and dig his fingernail into a two-inch long piece of plastic to access it.

There are many software enhancements made to the XV6900 that differentiates it from the other Windows Mobile Pro devices out there. We'll cover that in the next review.

The original GSM HTC Touch has been the best selling Windows Mobile phone ever. It was only a matter of time until a CDMA variant showed up in the United States, and as a result we have the white CDMA/EVDO Verizon XV6900, which is a rebranded version of the HTC Vogue. You can get it for $249 with a new contract, or $400 outright.

The HTC Vogue, or XV6900, whatever you want to call it, is actually an improved version of the original GSM/EDGE Touch that we reviewed. It's got a 400MHz processor (vs 201MHz) and doubles the amount of ROM and RAM. It also adds quicker data speeds with EVDO. Check out this comparison chart to see all of the changes.

Out of the box, I wasn't impressed with the presentation. If you buy an HTC-branded device, it comes surrounded in fitted black foam that becomes exposed immediately after the box is opened. Verizon doesn't seem to think the out-of-box experience to be that important. Oh well.

The XV6900 is one of the few WinMo Pro/Pocket PC phones to have a flush touschscreen. This ...
