Here's our hardware tour of the T-Mobile G1. I really like the trackball. It seems more accurate than the Blackberries and is very similar to the HTC Artemis' trackball. Unfortunately the buttons on the front are very flat and difficult to feel for. There's not much differentiation. Also, the keyboard buttons are difficult to feel for as well.

In our size comparisons, the G1 is quite large, however it does have a large screen, which some may prefer. In terms of feel, there is definitely some plastic creaking, so it will not give you the impression of a high-end device.

Turns out that within the documentation that comes with the X1 is a folded black paper that says "X1 Support," and inside is a card with information on how to get in touch with a real person to ask them phone questions. Inside, it says:

This is your mobile manual to go, where you can learn about all of the functions on your X1 and solve any issues you have - an extra helping hand in addition to your operator and retailer contacts.

I just tested out the service, and they really didn't ask me for any proof that I had an X1. I went to m.sonyericsson.com/x1support and called the number there. I asked the lady on the other end how to enable the speakerphone on the X1 (as a test), and after being placed on hold for 3 minutes, she had an answer. Pretty cool. Do all Sony Ericsson phones have this?

According to Brighthand, a Microsoft spokesperson said, “We recently gave Windows Mobile device makers the final updates to our new browser. It's now up to our partners to roll out Internet Explorer Mobile 6 on their handsets; we're expecting some of the first phones with IE6 to be available in Asia and Europe by the end of calendar year 2008, with U.S. offerings to follow.”

This is big news as the current version of Internet Explorer has had little modification in 10 years. Granted, back then it was the best browser around on mobile devices, but times have changed. The new version will support embedded Flash, Silverlight, and streaming video as well as other Web 2.0 technologies like AJAX.

Matthew Miller wrote today on his ZDnet Blog a post called “I like Windows Mobile and am not ashamed to admit it”. This was in response to all the negative press and general ignorance about the advantages of using Windows Mobile devices.

I don’t see a lot of people standing up and saying they prefer and like using Windows Mobile, but I know there are lots of people out there that do enjoy using this platform and I am one of them. I have read many comments online recently where people are trying to figure out if they want an iPhone or a new BlackBerry, but rarely hear that they are even considering a new Windows Mobile device.
If you just look at the specs, Windows Mobile may be considered the most powerful and functional platform out there (S60 also may take this title).

So, take Matthew’s article for a read, and don’t be afraid to stand up for your right to love Windows Mobile and all that it can do for you.

The coolest new thing that the T-Mobile G1 is able to show off is the Google Maps Street View with digital compass mode. We've never seen anything like this before on any other platform. What this does is allows you to select a location on the map (blue highlights indicate street views that are available), and then load panoramic photographic views of that location. Then when you turn on compass mode, you can physically turn the phone to point in different directions and pan the panoramic photo accordingly. It's very cool and very impressive.

It's also entertaining to try to think of how this might actually be useful. For example, say you're near-sighted and you're walking down the street when somebody randomly punches you in the face and breaks your glasses. How are you going to get home if you can't see? Just turn on the Google Android street view and hold the screen close enough so that you can see where you are and where to go. Perfect!

The first thing I wanted to do when I got the new T-Mobile G1 Android Google Phone was turn it on. It shows a few nice animated tutorial screens that show you how to use your finger to scroll through things and access the notifications window shade. This is definitely good because those user interface elements are not as discoverable as they should be.

Next you're forced to either sign in with a Gmail account or create a new one. Since I do have an unused Gmail account already, I tried to sign in. It gave me the error shown below. I tried again and again and again. Same error. Finally, I decided to go to the create new account option, since that was the only other thing I could do. Went there, then cancelled out of it. Tried again to log in with my regular Gmail account and that worked. Hurray! The G1 then dutifully downloaded all of the spam messages in my account as well as the contacts and calendar data of which there was none.

Reports from the::unwired indicates that Microsoft will release Live Mesh later this week. Live Mesh is similar to Apple's Mobile Me in that it moves various computing elements into the cloud and should complement Office Web nicely.

Live Mesh will enable users to synchronize files between their PCs, Windows Mobile devices, and Macs, giving them access to a virtual drive. You can share and view files on the device or on the web through a web interface. In addition, Live Mesh will also give you access to your desktop, like a remote PC access would.

While Live Mesh won't make built-in storage memory obsolete, it does bring users closer to ubiquitous access of information.

Over four years after its release, the sheep shearers at Aceeca continue to tweak and refine their Palm OS 4.1.2-based Meazura MEZ1000 handheld with periodic ROM updates. The new beta ROM release ROM507rc4, dated October 20th, contains new CF slot drivers as well as a new serial port driver. Specifically the updates are listed by Aceeca as:

Microsoft is going the way of cloud computing. After demoing the next generation of Windows 7, the Redmond-based firm demonstrated a web-hosted suite of Office applications allowing you to collaborate, create, edit, and share Office documents on your web browser. This feature is similar to Google Docs, but brings the feature and interface closer to Office 2007. If you have a connected mobile phone, you can also have access to Office Web. This would dramatically improve Windows Mobile Office applications like Word Mobile, Excel Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile, and OneNote Mobile.

According to Ars Technica, At PDC today, Office Web functionality demonstrated in a keynote showed off real-time collaboration on OneNote documents between a desktop PC and a Windows Mobile handheld. More information and a private technology preview will be available at the Office Live Workspace site later this year. At this point, however, it is unclear where the functional line will be drawn between Office on the desktop and on the web. In addition to Word, PowerPoint, Excel and OneNote, Microsoft is said to bring a fifth Office program to the web.
