Pregnancy round 2 A few differences between this pregnancy and the last: I haven’t gained nearly as much weight. At this point (holy shit, I’m 32 weeks pregnant!) I’ve probably only gained about 20 pounds. By 32 weeks with the Fiendling I was up at least 40. I’m sooooo tired. Not that I wasn’t tired last time, but this time it’s worse because I can’t nap every afternoon for 2 or 3 hours. Even though I haven’t gained that much weight I feel enormous and have grown out of most of my maternity

This is pretty neat. As mentioned over at
AllShadow.com, you can remove the scroll bars from your Standard/Smartphone device:
Using a
registry editor:
Go to: HKLM/System/GWE:
Set the following values
cxHScr=0
cxVScr=0
cyHScr=0
cyVScr=0
And if you dont want to totally remove the scroll bars, but thin them out a bit, you can set these values:
cxVScr=3 (original 6)
cyHScr=3 (original 6)
I just tested this hack on my Motorola Q9h, and it works great...can't complain about some extra screen space.

I was browsing the
Microsoft Research website this morning when I came across an interesting beta called HDView. HDView takes hundreds of pictures and strings them together to create ultra high-resolution images that you can use to see tremendous detail in a scene.
The technology could be promising for virtual tours and urban planning. I could also see it being integrated into a future version of Windows Live Search for Mobile - imagine pulling up a clickable image of downtown San Diego, where'd you be able to tap a store or restaurant and get more information such as a menu or phone number.

Nokia's Communicator style mobile phone/PDA hybrid has long been a popular choice for enterprise users, particularly in Europe. The MIU HDPC will change up that landscape a bit. HDPC, short for Hybrid Dual Portable Computer, packs 7 hours of battery life when booting in from Windows XP or Linux (uncertain at the moment) and some 90 hours on Windows Mobile. That's pretty intense.
The device also throws in an exterior dial which slides and tilts, similar to a SideKick meets the TyTN II/Tilt. There is a 4 inch 800 X 480 touchscreen inside, a 1 GHz VIA ultra low voltage CPU, and up to 4GB DDR RAM. There is also a 3-5 megapixel camera with flash and exterior screen with dial pad for the phone features.
It is unclear what bands and what technology powers the phone, whether it's GSM with HSDPA for high speed internet access or CDMA with EVDO for broadband speeds.
You can check out the details and photos at
The Boy Genius Report, but from the looks of things, I probably wouldn't expect this to hit Stateside any time soon.

In-car computers and navigation systems are becoming very popular these days. Lately you may have heard of Microsoft's Sync system brand of in-car computer. Ray Doan and I took a look at this system at the New York Auto Show. Here's a video of how it works.
Now, there are two versions of the Sync system; one with a touch screen and one without. The one you see in the video is a touch screen enabled system. We'll show you the non-touchscreen version in another post.
One issue with this system is that since the touchscreen is also used with a voice-controlled GPS navigation system (which is not well integrated with Sync), you have to start from the main menu via the voice commands every time. Ideally if you were already in the media playing mode, you should only have to say "Play Artist Toby Keith". Unfortunately, you have to specify which device the command is for before you can do that.
The Sync system does seem to work very well with mobile phones however. It connects via Bluetooth and can access your address book as well as text messages and ...

Jonathan Zittrain, who is affiliated with Oxford University and Harvard's Berkman Center, recently released a provocatively titled book: The Future of the Internet--And How to Stop It. It's an interesting read and I recommend you pick it up despite what I'll say about it in a moment. (Incidentally, if you ever have a chance to hear Jonathan speak, I highly recommend you do so. He is, bar none, the most entertaining tech policy geek in the world. Imagine Dennis Miller with a cyberlaw degree.)

But that leaves us wondering: do you regularly seek out reviews before buying software (for example, if you're thinking about buying XYZ program, you will Google "XYZ review" before buying)? Or do you just look at the description and/or screenshots at the place of purchase?

Gather together a bunch of master programmers, and ask each one of them to write a chapter about a bit of code that they are really fascinated about. The tome is almost 600 pages thick - but can it stack up? The book is subdivided into 33 parts which each were written by a different author. Thus, each chapter is (mostly) independent from a

Engadget Mobile is reporting that LG is introducing a new user interface dubbed the Hello UI. The new platform will support a full web browsing experience and will run on top of a crisp 800 by 600 pixels display. The new consumer phone, not smartphone, will be available in Korea for $600.
With regular consumer phones following the Apple iPhone's footsteps in offering a full browsing experience, hopefully Microsoft will begin to offer a better Internet Explorer experience. Microsoft has been making progress with the promise of the Silverlight plugin to come later this year as well as the recent licensing of Adobe FlashLite 3.

Dieter Bohn from WMExperts has put together a great article that speaks to the
Windows Mobile user interface and how it can be improved.
Within the article are quotes from HTC's Peter Chou, where he mentions how the default interface for Windows Mobile is "very techy and not intuitive." Well put, Mr. Chou.
Then Dieter shells out five changes that need to be made to Windows Mobile to improve the UI:
1. Forget about the desktop. It doesn't exist. It never existed. Instead, think about how you interact with that rock I mentioned earlier. It's not a mistake that Jeff Hawkins invented the Palm Pilot by carrying around a block of wood. Whatever the present-day equivalent of carrying around a block of wood is, do that.
2. Unify the platform (you said you would): It's bad enough that there's Desktop Windows interface elements in Windows Mobile. It's well-nigh unforgivable that Windows Mobile Pro and Windows Mobile standard don't share the same interface System Intuition.
3. Keep your strengths (yes, you do have them). One example: that just start typing feature, it's really cool. It's a core strength. Let me Just start ...
