OhGizmo! Review - EPOS Digital Pen & USB Flash Drive Gadgets, Site Feeds, ohgizmo.com No Comments » By Andrew Liszewski When I first read about this whole ‘digital pen’ trend a year or so ago, I really wasn’t sure if there was a market for the devices as most people now rely on computers, cellphones and PDAs when it comes to communicating or jotting down notes. But based on the feedback I got from my review of the FLY Fusion Pentop Computer there’s definitely a large group of consumers

In the previous two videos on this "Sync" series we talked about the touch-screen version of the in-car computer on Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles as well as it's Bluetooth capabilities. That version of the system also includes a voice activated GPS Navigation system that is not as well integrated as it should be.

Today we'll look at the version of Microsoft's Sync in-car computer that does not use a touch screen and is actually much easier to use since you don't have to start at the main menu prompt every time you want to do a voice command.

It's cool how when you send a text message from the car, it also adds the "This message was sent from my Ford" signature to the end of the message. In the future, you'll be able to program your own list of text message responses and install them to the Sync system with a USB memory stick.

MobilitySite is reporting that AT&T is offering March Madness savings on the Tilt and BlackJack II. The Tilt will run $249.99 on a two-year agreement whereas the BlackJack II is only $19.99 refurbished.

These are pretty good prices. Also, BlackJack IIs now qualify for wireless insurance from AT&T. You must enroll within 30 days. The Tilt, however, isn't covered through AT&T and you must seek third party sources for insurance.

Treocentral Review: Natara Bonsai 4 Treocentral has published a review of Natara Bonsai 4. As a longtime SplashNotes outliner, I’m too rooted in my ways to switch to Bonsai. SplashNotes gives me the Zen of Palm simplicity I still prefer in a handheld application, but Bonsai is clearly more fully featured, supporting more file formats and configuration options. Bonsai’s only real limitation is its inability to import and export Word outlines. If you do any outlining or list making at

Engadget Mobile is reporting that Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard has been hacked to work with the BlackJack. If you can't wait for the official update, assuming one is actually coming for the soon to be retired original BlackJack and not the BlackJack II, then you can head over to TxCaesar's Mobile Repository and grab yourself the ROM.

At this time, the cooked ROM is in alpha and beta forms. There is always a risk of making your device inoperable with any upgrade of the system ROM. Installing a non-official ROM will make your warranty void so follow all the directions to the letter.

Snakes! Snakes on a Plane! (It’s really getting to where I need a category for this, but even I don’t want to weed through all the old entries to relabel them all.) Upon returning from weekend trip to South Carolina, the Yorktown High School rowing coach reached into his suitcase and discovered a small (and irritated) canebrake rattlesnake.  The snake, probably somewhat disturbed by the large male hand reaching into its happy place, bit the coach, who immediately called emergency personnel to

Rule #1 was Design with Consistency.

Rule #2 is Enable Keyboard Shortcuts.

The great majority of Windows Mobile devices have hardware buttons and keyboards/keypads. Beginning with Windows Mobile 5, the operating system was designed to take advantage of hardware buttons for increased user interaction efficiency and usability.

Windows Mobile has two hardware keys that are assigned to the left and right bottom bar menus/functions also known as soft keys. This makes it very easy to open those menus using the hardware buttons that you can feel with your fingers. You instantly know what pressing those hardware buttons will do.

Subsequently, if you have a Qwerty keyboard, you will see that each menu item has one of the letters underlined. Pressing the corresponding letter on the keyboard instantly activates that command without you having to scroll using the D-pad or touch the screen. This is an excellent feature for efficiency.

Third party developers usually adhere to this design convention on Windows Mobile Standard because they have to. There’s no touch screen to use as a secondary interface.

The problem is on Windows Mobile Professional which ...

I have been trying out Voice on the Go, a $5.99 subscription-based service, that allows you to call a local number and retrieve your emails as you would voicemail. The automated, semi-robotic voice reads back your emails to you and you can also check to see your upcoming appointments and tasks, similar to Microsoft Voice Command.

However, the similarities end here. Voice on the Go also lets you create and compose new emails and new tasks using the power of your own voice. The procedures are fairly easy--export your Outlook contacts, upload them to the Voice on the Go servers, and then say "Compose Email." The system will ask you which contact and you can speak "John Doe." It will retrieve the appropriate matches and you can quickly compose your email in a natural sounding voice.

In my test of the software, it was fairly accurate and got most of my contacts correct, even ones that sounded obscure. While the steps to using Voice on the Go was fairly simple, I wish the web interface was more current and easier to navigate, although you can quickly browse through what you needed.

You can go ...

According to Reuters:

Microsoft, the world's largest software maker, has predicted its Windows Mobile license sales will reach 20 million in its fiscal year ending in June, nearly doubling its sales from a year earlier.
...

"(Gaining market share) is going to happen, in our view, as a platform play. The way for us to be successful in that is to get big numbers and a bigger percentage of that pie," said Bach.

Analysts estimate that Microsoft generates license revenue of $8 to $15 per handset, depending on configuration.

This sounds about right. I continue to see a higher and higher percentage of people carrying Windows Mobile devices around in New York City. Even friends who were normally dumb-phone users have upgraded to feature-rich Windows Mobile devices.

After Ray and I saw the initial demo of Microsoft's Sync in-car computer, we decided to get it connected to my HTC TyTN II.

The TyTN II paired perfectly, and the Sync system offered both headset and wireless stereo profiles to us. When pairing, the Sync system also asked if we wanted to download my contacts, call history, and text messages. As you can see in the video, the A2DP wireless stereo music playing worked great.

Our Ford Sync representative noted that some people were frustrated that the Sync system wouldn't work with their iPhones. This is probably due to Apple's tendency to not retain backwards compatibility with accessories. Plus, the iPhone doesn't have streaming stereo Bluetooth audio anyway. The good news is that just about all other music phones do (including Windows Mobile and Symbian smartphones) and thus will very likely work with the in-car Sync system.

Via Hot Air: D.C. police are going door-to-door Monday in one of the city’s crime-plagued neighborhoods, asking residents for permission to search their homes for guns and other illegal contraband. The program, called the Safe Homes Initiative, will offer homeowners and renters limited amnesty for possessing any contraband found by police. Ah, “programs”, don’t we need more liberal programs? At least in this case the Supreme Court may soon rule that guns can’t be banned in Washington, DC.
