Lately, the trend in GPS Navigation programs seems to be headed towards removing important features instead of fixing bugs, improving functionality, and increasing usability. I don't know why so many Navigation program companies are doing this. It makes upgrades feel a lot more like downgrades. Do they think we won't notice? Anyway, CoPilot Live has always been one of the most feature-rich GPS Navigation programs for Windows Mobile. It does things none of the others can do. Let's find out what they've added to CoPilot Live version 7 and what they've removed. Read on for much more!

Overall Rating:

The Good
  • Free live traffic

  • Both Windows Mobile Pro and Standard versions included

  • CoPilot Central can manage/sync trip data

  • The Bad
  • Map data not reliable

  • Text-to-speech feature removed

  • Doesn't announce side-of-street for destinations

There is another application that provides customized alerts to your inbox, alerting users with ringtones for the various email accounts you have so you can differentiate between emails received on a work or personal account, for different senders, and for SMS messages. QoreFunctions is introducing InboxTones for an introductory $12.95 price right now. There are separate applications for the Professional and Standard platforms.

I can see this being a great tool as you wouldn't need to be alerted to every email sometimes and if you know it's the boss emailing, you wouldn't check everytime your Windows Mobile phone chimes. This will help also to alleviate the constant struggle to check email, especially with the large amount of spam, and will increase one's mindfulness as you could ignore the unimportant emails, depending on the rules you set.

The other product that currently does this is Watchflag.

PC Magazine has some photos of the latest build of Android shown at CTIA. Can someone tell me what’s so special about this operating system?

It doesn’t look good at all. It doesn’t look remotely usable. The icons on the programs screen are way too small compared to the guy’s thumb size. They’re definitely not going to be readable like that. Maybe there will be a market for magnifying glass attachments. There’s a ton of negative space that’s completely wasted there too.

Then look at Google Maps. All it is is a map. There appears to be no way to zoom, pan, access options, do a search, show traffic, get directions, etc. If I can’t see the controls and options, how am I supposed to figure out how to use them? Are there hardware buttons for controlling this? Who knows?! You won’t be able to figure it out by looking at the interface.

Same with the web browser. Where’s the URL? Where are my favorites? Does this browser simply not have any functionality? You would assume so judging by ...

Many Windows Mobile devices already include the Windows Live software which gives you "push" Hotmail syncing, Live contacts syncing, the Live Search today screen item, and the Live Spaces photo upload plug-in. Unfortunately, a lot of manufacturers choose to not include these features. So if you're missing Windows Live, now you can download it for free from wl.windowsmobile.com. Both Standard and Professional versions are available.

The bad news is: Windows Live Messenger is not included in this download. This is quite unfortunate since Live Messenger is such a great addition to Windows Mobile.

OhGizmo! Review - Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick Gadgets, Site Feeds, ohgizmo.com No Comments » By Andrew Liszewski As February 17, 2009 creeps closer and closer, many people are rushing out to upgrade their old analog TV sets with brand new digital HD models. Of course I have no problem with that, but did you realize that fancy new LCD monitor you bought for your PC can also serve as a high-def display? It probably won’t be able to tune in an over-the-air HD signal right out of the box, but that

I saw an ad in a magazine today that had Sprint's unlimited plan priced at around $100, which includes unlimited everything, not just voice.

So that made me wonder: of the major carriers in the US, who has the best unlimited plan at the $99.99 price point? Looking at the grid below, we see that Sprint and Helio offer the best deals, including everything, including SMS, MMS, and data, into one price. AT&T and Verizon offer several tiers of the unlimited plan (that go up to $139.99). With these unlimited deals, real savings can be achieved if you cancel your home phone service and use just a cell phone.

The European Commission just agreed to allow for in-flight calling in European air space. The Commission did urge mobile operators to set their prices at a reasonable level. According to Engadget Mobile, the European Aviation Safety Agency still needs to stamp its approval on hardware that would be used to facilitate in-flight calling.

Air France last week had announced that it would launch a trial of its in-flight calling program. Now, it seems that the rest of European airlines could do the same with a green light from the European Commission

Call history proves to be very useful if you need to back track a few days to salvage a phone number that you forgot to save. Trouble is, by default, you can only see the last 100 incoming and outgoing calls. For those of us that make many calls, 100 calls could be just a few days worth. Well, with a quick registry hack, you can extend your call history log so that you can go back several weeks.

    Using a registry editor:

    Go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Phone
Change value "CallHistoryMax" from 100 to a higher number.

In November, we posted a bit called How to Watch Internet Video (Finally) on Your Device, and many of you found the article to be very helpful.

Well, now there is another (much easier) way to get video on your Windows Mobile device. vTap lets you watch video from many sources - YouTube, CNN, MSNBC, and so on, from one light application. You'll have a much better experience using vTap if you are using a 3G or WiFi connection. Over EDGE, there will be a lot of buffering.

vTap is free and works with all versions of Windows Mobile above 5.0. Visit vtap.com on your phone to download the application.

For more info on this, plus a video walk through of using vTap, visit the post at AllShadow.com.

250_triforce-htc2.jpgThe Triforce Touchscreen Pointer is a marketing ploy destined for swag-bag oblivion, but it could also be a rare case where functionality and tchotchke coalesce into something genuinely useful. First, the lanyard-pointer from Specialdesign eliminates the act of fumbling with your PDA's lanky stylus. Second, the lanyard means no more dropped devices. Finally, when Specialdesign promises the Triforce pairs up with "hip hop" devices you just know the transformation from vanilla roadwarrior to white party-throwing music mogul is close at hand. No info on pricing, sorry. [Triforce, via GeekAlerts]

Handmark has released TV Guide Mobile, a free TV Guide viewing program for Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices (but not the iPhone). Besides allowing you to view a grid of TV listings, you can set up alerts (text messages, not alarms, unfortunately) and read TV Guide news and columns.

I installed it on my Motorola Q9m yesterday and it's OK, and the price is certainly right. There are a couple of issues I have with it, though.

The biggest issue is that the grid view only shows four channels and two half-hour segments per screen. Part of the reason for that is because there's a show information box at the top of the screen that doesn’t give much more information than you see in the grid (you get the show ratings and the network/channel logo). There are also Page Up/Page Down bars and a fairly large ad. If you got rid of those and used normal scrolling to page up and down, you’d probably see six extra channels per page. You wouldn't see any more time segments, but it would be a big improvement. (I realize they need to display the ...
