If the Touch Pro is a sexy device with a touchscreen, then the new
HTC S740 is the Windows Mobile Standard version sans the touchscreen and add a QWERTY and number pad. The new non-touch smartphone has a lot of design elements from its Touch Pro cousin. The device got some hands-on time at

User nitramk from XDA Developers comes with a very handy by request tool, addressing the wishes of many users and creating the first Diamond StopWatch application. This free utility can run on both Diamond and Touch Pro, as well as theoretically on every Windows Mobile device featuring a touch sensitive VGA display.
There isnt really much to the story, its a simple StopWatch with basic functions like Start, Stop, Reset and Split times but what makes this application stand out, besides the full integration with Diamonds aspect, is that it can store and save up to 10 split times for later reference.
Using a three decimal time measuring system,
StopWatch ver. 1.0 is the first free application of its breed, especially designed for the Diamond and Touch Pro.

Though SyncMate isn’t new, they’ve just released a version with a long awaited feature - the ability to sync using a locked Windows Mobile/Pocket PC device. The free version of SyncMate is limited to only syncing your Contacts and iCal calendar (and Google Contacts and/or Google Calendar) - but that’s more than enough for me. It’s also worth

The combination of free calls and cheap high speed internet access (using the handset's HSDPA modem capabilities) seems to be a favourite among those who've tried the phone so far, and I've summarised a few of the latest reviews below. Neil Bird at iGadget Life has posted a follow-up to his original photos of the 3 Skyp

According to
MobilitySite, American Airlines already launched their in-flight WiFi services on select trans-continental flights. The service is dubbed Gogo and will block VOIP over its WiFi network. However, MobilitySite is reporting that there is a workaround to Gogo to enable VOIP. You could log into
Phweet with your Twitter account and have a voice conversation with someone over the Twitter network. The downside is that both parties need to have Twitter accounts. The upside is that the call will be cheaper than the in-flight phone service.

Yesterday, Brandon illustrated a way to get the
Omnia Widgets on any generic Windows Mobile devices. Today, we are going to show you how to replicate the XPERIA tiled interface experience on a non-Sony Ericsson device. This way, if you are in love with the Touch Pro's hardware, as we have discovered that the XPERIA's
keyboard has been less than stellar, and still want the tile interface, you can still have it! According to
wmpoweruser.com, there's an application called Dynamo 3, which allows for the tiled interface. Dynamo 3 is like an application task manager so you can quickly switch between applications.
Between Dynamo 3 and the Widgets from Samsung, and possibly TouchFLO 3D if you get the Touch Pro or Touch Diamond, you will have one killer device!
Dynamo 3 could be downloaded from
XDA-Developers.

XDA Developers' sandeman684 decided to go on his own and write a free application that would be considered as the successor of Microsofts retired Expenses tool.
Easy Expenses, currently at version 0.91, will be your perfect business travelling companion, with the ability to track, store and log your expenses.
It basicaly keeps track of your expenses, while offering the ability of entering your information by selecting from the following list categories: Currency (it only supports US$, EUR and GBP for now), Expense type (ie.: taxi, dinner, lunch, etc.), Expense date, Intended source (Employer, Client, Myself) and Paid with (Employers Cash, My Cash, Mastercard, Visa).
One other interesting feature is that the application offers optional program database location; you can now choose where to save your expenses log.
Besides being fully finger friendly (there is a 5 digit limitation while using this method),
Easy Expenses will soon gain smartphone compatibility (so just Touchscreen for now).

Popular gaming titles are slowly coming to Windows Mobile.
msmobiles is reporting that
Electronic Arts has ported The Simpsons and The Sims 2 among other titles to Windows Mobile while
wmpoweruser.com is reporting that Lamity, a Second Life-like experience, will be coming to Windows Mobile in which 400 people can simultaneously play in a virtual town. Lamity is expected to be a cross-platform game, with Android support to be in development.
Traditionally, complex games like Second Life, of which Lamity is based upon, requires complex graphics and therefore is difficult to port to a mobile platform. However, Lamity is made possible with advances in mobile technology such as NVIDIA's APX 2500 platform. Also, with more devices sporting accelerometer, such as the
Samsung Omnia, the
Touch Pro, and the
Touch Diamond, we can look forward to new ways to interact with our devices.

Brandon just forwarded me an article from
lifehacker detailing some of the best, most useful, free applications to enhance the functionality and/or look of your Windows Mobile devices. Most of these applications have been covered in detail at pocketnow.com, but it's a nice reminder of how much great, free software there is to make a great device even greater, especially in light of emerging platforms with stability woes (read: iPhone app crashes).
System Utilities
1. Mac synchronization: Sure, ActiveSync is a love/hate issue for Windows users, but if you're a Mac user and need a free way to synchronize your device, you can download
SyncMate from Etima.
2. Backup of important data: PIM Backup is a great app that backups your PIM information, text messages, emails, and call logs. Best of all, it resides locally on your device so you don't need to be near a computer to use it. You can store it on your memory card.
3. Synchronization for the subversive: If you're not an Outlook user and use Thunderbird, you should check out
FinchSync.
4. Backup to the cloud:
DashWire allows you to backup your ...

HotHardware.com has posted their take on Lenovo’s new ultraportable baby, the X200. Here is a quote:
"It is obvious from its feature list that the X200 isn’t quite as advanced, in terms of its mechanical design, as the X300. Despite being of similar weight and size as the X300, the X200 doesn’t have an internal optical drive, nor is it as thin and it doesn’t even have a touchpad. It also sports a 12.1” screen like the X61, rather than the 13.3” LCD that the X300 is equipped with. However, the X200 isn’t lacking in its base hardware specification, that’s for sure. It incorporates all of the same communications, networking and connectivity options and features as the X300. In addition, it’s also built on Intel’s new Centrino 2 platform which offers support for the new Penryn-based Core 2 Duo mobile processor. The X200 is available with the Penryn P8000 series, which is an upgrade of the original Merom mobile Core 2 Duo processors and it offers 3MB L2 cache, a 1066MHz FSB, front-side bus throttling, and the SSE4 instruction set. Most impressive of all, it has a TDP of only 25W, 10W lower than Merom, despite packing more features and ...

A premium portable navigation device for those looking for both style and substance, the NAVIGON 7200T offers cool features such as Reality View Pro, Lane Assistant Pro and Free Real-Time Traffic Updates for Life. It features a host of next generation features such as Voice Destination Entry, allowing drivers to specify their destination by simply speaking the address, and Landmark View 3D, which brings a new dimension to the map with hundreds of richly-textured 3D landmarks across the U.S. and Canada. The NAVIGON 7200T employs NAVIGON’s next generation software, on average requiring fewer clicks than any other GPS product to enter a destination.
The unit features a 4.3-inch, 16:9 touchscreen display, 2GB of flash storage, a SiRF GRF3i+ GPS chip, microSD card support, 64MB of RAM, powered by a Centrality Titan I 600MHz CPU.
NAVIGON 7200T will sell for $449 (MSRP) in the U.S. and Canada. It hits stores shelves and online retailers in October 2008. Customers can already pre-order NAVIGON 7200T devices at Amazon.com.

If you want a neat way to visualize what programs and files are taking up space on your device (whether it's on main memory or on a storage card), take a look at
MobileMonger, a free program from James Boman. It requires
.NET Framework 3.5 and will only work on touchscreen WinMo devices.
As an example of how you'd use this, you can tap and zoom in on My Documents (or any directory), and eliminate pictures or documents that are unnecessarily taking up large amounts of space based on what you see on the screen.

It looks like a web client for Photoshop will be coming to Windows Mobile, allowing users to upload pictures to Photoshop.com and edit then over the air on the cloud later. All the new photo goodness should be launching by the end of September, and according to
wmpoweruser.com, the new Photoshop.com on Windows Mobile will rely on the new Adobe Flash Lite 3 protocol.
It seems that the web client should work with both Windows Mobile Standard and Professional/Classic devices, although the latter's touchscreen will not work with the program requiring navigating by hardware directional pad. If that is true, it will be a great shame as the
Omnia would benefit from a best in class photo editing program as it does sport a high resolution camera.
More information could be obtained direct from

The Gemini Division, an online-only web television series produced by NBC, we see the main character, played by Rosario Dawson, using an ultra-thin widescreen Windows Mobile device to record and send her video messages to a friend via Windows Live Messenger.
I'm not sure why she wasn't using full duplex video calling. Perhaps her friend wasn't online at the time and she had to send an offline video call.
In the second and third episodes, you'll get a look at Windows Live Search on Windows Mobile 10.

by Michael Erikson There are a lot of different things to consider when buying a PDA, for the average Joe this can be a jungle. Some aspectes of electronic gadgets appeal more to the affectioned side of a person, often things like design, size and age of the model. We like to have brand new things of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that, but we seem to forget the intended use and let affection take over a little to much from time to time. Google has launched their new Gears Geolocation API which currently works exclusively on Windows Mobile devices. The Geolocation API allows web developers to access user device locations via GPS or cell ID tower locations.
Don't worry about stalkers, though:
The privacy of users' location information is extremely important. The first time your site calls the Geolocation API to request a user's location, that user will be shown a permissions dialog where they can choose to allow or deny your site access. Users can change that decision at any time via the "Gears settings" dialog in the browser menu. Google does not keep location information about users when your site uses the Geolocation API.
If you're in the UK and want to try it out, visit
m.lastminute.com and
m.rummble.com. The first time you use the location feature you will be prompted to download and install Gears.
