We're getting many emails from people who want to know which is better: the HTC Touch HD, or the SE XPERIA X1. Well, the answer has mostly been "it depends" because each device has its own merits and weaknesses, and everyone has different needs when it comes to mobile phones. Here, we compare video performance.

To start, I should mention that the Touch HD has an 800x480 screen that is 3.8", and the XPERIA X1 has a screen of the same resolution and 3.0" size. Using CorePlayer, which is a very robust video player that each device desperately needs, we can benchmark the video performance of each device, shown below. The file that was benchmarked was a trailer from the movie Transformers, and each device was soft reset prior to testing.

With a 12% higher framerate and 13% higher average speed, the Touch HD beats the XPERIA X1. Here you can find everything you need to get your started and have your CommManager look like the ones in the screenshot: 3 cabs to suit your needs as per CommManager contents, Beam and Ringer icons and a link to that neat blue slider. For a complete effect, make sure you match them with a blue theme, like the one found here.

Just decide which one suits your needs, download and install to Device. If you don't like them anymore, just uninstall to revert to original.

Just when we're talking about the relevance of FlashLite 3.1 on Windows Mobile devices, Adobe and ARM are partnering to bring Flash 10 to mobile devices. The move will bring Flash, a standard created by Adobe, to mobile devices running ARM processors--most Windows Mobile devices run on ARM. Moreover, with Apple still reluctant to adopt Flash standards for its mobile version of the Safari browser on the iPhone, Flash 10 for Windows Mobile should make Microsoft's platform more competitive as users seek to browse media-rich sites on their handhelds.

According to the::unwired, which has gotten confirmation from Adobe, Flash 10 won't be released until the end of next year. In the interim, FlashLite 3.x will ship with Pocket Internet Explorer for Windows Mobile devices.

This is welcomed news as I had previously written that FlashLite 3.1 is dated. Although the protocol is more advanced that Flash Player 2 for Pocket PC and FlashLite 2.x, FlashLite 3.1 can only work with sites made with Flash 8 or earlier; most newer sites are coded with Flash 9 or better making FlashLite 3.1 inoperable with those sites.

XDA Developers’ CM Settings is a tiny application which has a great functionality in empowering you to customize your Windows Mobile Professional’s Communications Manager the way you want it.

CM Settings will allow you to choose between available Comm Manager styles and skins on your Pocket PC, by scanning the Windows folder. In addition, you can now select which entries will be displayed in the Comm Manager, allowing you to taylor it the way you want, disabling features you don’t use (maybe Activesync or Microsoft Direct Push) and replacing them with those you are using more often (like maybe Beam or Ringer).

Installation should go to Device, after which you are free to customize. CM Settings is also multilangiage enabled and has a lot of description and support on it’s home thread.

The folks over at PocketPCDubai got a chance to visit Gitex 2008, where they saw some interesting Windows Mobile devices made by TechFaith wireless, a company that makes handsets for carriers around the world.

Of the half dozen or so handsets listed, the most interesting is the Bono - essentially an HTC TyTN II but with a much higher resolution WVGA 3.0" screen. It's triband GSM (850/900/1800) and dualband UMTS (1900/2100), so in theory, it should work in the US should you find a way to import it.

In somewhat of an ironical situation that makes you want to laugh and pull your hair out like a mad man, I've discovered that the Internet Sharing application on the Fuze is totally unusable--it was so slow that it took over five minutes for DSL Reports to load the home page let alone a speed test. I've been playing around with my friend's HTC Fuze on AT&T trying to get things setup for him and had applied the registry modifications to enable internet sharing, which let the application run and not terminate an internet connection. However, the connection is really slow.

I tried WMWiFiRouter next, which does pretty much the same thing as the built in Internet Sharing but also allows sharing the connection via an ad-hoc WiFi network in addition to USB and Bluetooth tethering. WMWiFiRouter costs $25 versus free for the other. Instead of going through USB or Bluetooth, I used the WiFi sharing feature of WMWiFiRouter and it is much, much, much faster. Over the WiFi connection, I averaged 1,048 Kbps and 70 Kpbs to upload. Although the upload speed could be faster, the download speed was great.
