Brandon writes, "On 24 June 2008, Spb Software House, a well-respected company in the Windows Mobile software world, released a press release stating that the upcoming Toshiba Portege G810 would be the result of a collaboration between Toshiba and Spb to deliver "the ultimate mobile device experience." I applaud both companies for taking a new approach to delivering a Windows Mobile device, one that we have yet to see. But does it make sense? Or is this just Toshiba hardware with some Spb software? We've got the answer in this review."

In this video, I cover the hardware of the device. The hardware buttons are completely flat and thus difficult to feel for. The stylus is not only awkwardly placed, but feels cheap and unconventional.
I was a bit surprised to find that the microSD slot had no covering, which could make it susceptible to accumulating dust and debris when no card is present.
After having more time with the Spb Software House Enhancements, I'm much more excited about the software end of the device. The flick scrolling (which comes from Pocket Plus) is the best I've seen on a Windows Mobile device. And the animations used in Mobile Shell are smooth and fun to use.
Oh, and that full screen keyboard. It's horrendous. I much prefer using a keyboard like
TouchPal, which has the choice of a T9 pad, SureType pad, and regular keyboard with large buttons.

Hi guys and gals, We got a hold of the Toshiba Portege G810 WinMo Pro 6.1 touch screen phone, and it's actually pretty darned cool! The camera is very good, the GPS plays nicely with Google Maps, Windows Live and CoPilot 7 and it's hard ...

How is the Toshiba Portege G810 different than any other device that has some Spb software thrown onto it? Well, it's really not. There are some interesting qualities of the hardware, which we'll get to later, but essentially what we have is an HTC Touch-like device with Spb Mobile Shell, Pocket Plus, and Full Screen Keyboard. And that's not a bad thing, because these software titles (especially the first two) are top notch.
I'm starting to really enjoy using Mobile Shell - it allows me to forget the ugly interface of Windows Mobile for a minute and use something that is more visually pleasing. My tendency is to discount Mobile Shell and just use the standard Today screen, but I'm forcing myself to get used to the "Now" screen, as Spb calls it.
Oh, and I really don't like the stylus. I understand the need to be different, but come on, Toshiba, why do I have to pull off half the side of the device to get to the stylus? It feels cheap, and isn't quick and easy to reach for.
There are some very cool elements of Mobile Shell ...

We have
another first to report: a Windows Mobile software company teaming up with a hardware maker on a new device. The result is the Toshiba Portege G810, which comes with several software enhancements out of the box made by
Spb Software House.
Let's do a rundown of specs. It's a WinMo 6.1 quadband GSM device that also packs HSDPA/HSUPA. It is being sold in Europe as of a few days ago, but it will work on US GSM carriers (T-Mobile and AT&T). It sports the same Qualcomm 400MHz processor as the i-mate 9502 and HTC TyTN II. It has 256MB ROM, 128MB of RAM, WiFi (b/g), Bluetooth 2.0, USB 2.0, aGPS, and a nice-sized 1530mAh battery powering it all (as comparison, the HTC Touch, a similar device, has a 1100mAh battery). The screen is 2.8", and unfortunately is QVGA and not VGA.
After using the device for a few minutes, I can report that the Portege G810 has the following software enhancements form Spb Software House:
Mobile Shell,
Pocket Plus (Today screen additions plus flick scrolling), and Full screen keyboard. I've got some more exploring ...

This is very interesting. Spb Software House
has collaborated with Toshiba on software enhancements to the recently announced
G810 WinMo Pro phone. Out of the box, the G810 will include Spb Mobile Shell, Spb Full Screen Keyboard, Spb Pocket Plus, and other enhancements. This is the first time that a third-party Windows Mobile software company has worked with a hardware company on software integration.
We'll have an unboxing and full review of the G810 in a bit. Check back soon!

Toshiba's innovative UMPC is still a concept at this stage and no pricing nor release details are available at present. However, the device, which looks somewhat like a shrunken down iMac with its "chin"--the large area beneath the display, utilizes some concepts from HTC's smartphones, mainly the use of
gestures to call up menus.
According to a video on
MobilitySite, users can swipe their fingers from the left side to the center to pull up a quick launch menu application. Swiping the finger from the bottom up to the center will call up a soft input keyboard for typing.
