Sony has released a software update for its mobile Internet device (MID) which brings improved performance, multimedia refinements, and other enhancements.

Sony has started work on a mobile phone that will be part of its popular PlayStation line, according to a new report.

The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 is one of the hottest Windows Mobile devices to come around. The Engadget team was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to handle one at a show, and they were impressed.

Screen brightness was crisp and clear. The unit was a bit buggy due to it being a demo that is pre-release. Sony Ericsson will most likely clean up the unit a bit to make it more than stable. You can check out the gallery at Engadget.

With all the buzz behind the HTC-branded Touch Diamond, we didn't want to ignore another HTC-manufactured device. The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 may bear designed and engineered by Sony Ericsson, but it is manufactured by the venerable Windows Mobile manufacturer.

The folks over at The Boy Genius Report has gotten a demo unit and there is a lot to like with some areas for improvement.

According to their review, the XPERIA X1 has a bunch of connectivity options, as we already know--HSDPA for high speed data, GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi--and there will also be a separate version that will utilize the AWS 1700 high speed band for T-Mobile USA.

The device has a bright and crisp display, build quality was superb, and there are a variety of notification alerts via way of four colors for the LED. Although call quality was clear, the speaker volume could be louder.

The main issue that Boy Genius Report had with the device is that the keyboard had little travel to them meaning little tactile feedback.

Sony Ericsson is releasing a multi-functional USB modem that sports tri-band HSPA and quad-band GSM/EDGE connectivity for world-wide use. The MD400 and MD400g differs in that the MD400G will add GPS functionality to your Windows or Mac notebook.

Both MD400 and MD400G will feature 7.2 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload speeds for fast downloads and uploads.

In addition, the USB modem will double as a reader for the M2 Memory Stick Micro.

Availability is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2008. Pricing was not announced. The modem will be available in either black or white.

Sony Ericsson and Nokia are fighting it out for the most advanced camera phone features. The Nokia N95 has one of the nicest cameras for a smartphone.Engadget Mobile is reporting that the 8 megapixel Sony Ericsson Cyber-Shot C905 will also feature 3G, GPS, and Bluetooth.

The device will probably arrive later this year for around $770.

Although the Cyber-Shot C905 is not a smartphone, it may be a lightweight weekend or going out phone so that you can carry just your important numbers and information and have access to a camera and the phone for basic communication needs.

Gizmodo is showing off Sony's new GPS add-on for its PSP system. The new GPS module plugs in neatly to the PlayStation Portable along with software that can be stored on a Memory Stick or UMD for access to maps.

The maps look like the new 3D maps from iGo 8, with 3D building renderings and realistic terrains.

It does not look very user-friendly to me.




However, the device does certainly look quite stylish.

The lack of softkey hardware buttons and directional buttons on the keyboard seems to be a huge oversight. Without those buttons, you'll have to take one hand off the keyboard and use your finger or a stylus to access the menus every time you want to interact with the device. It's a pretty obvious problem and sure to be an annoyance with power users.

On the plus side, it looks like the video recording and camera quality is up to speed with the Nokia N95!
