As if being the exclusive carrier in the US for Apple's iPhone wasn't enough, Engadget Mobile is reporting that AT&T will be rolling out its very own iClone in the form of the Samsung Omnia. Sprint's competitively piced iClone was a hit and AT&T will be joining the foray of carriers launching alternatives to the iPhone that will have the black slab, chrome bezel look.

The Omnia seems to be a good handset and Samsung has experience with Windows Mobile. However, I am not so sure about the screen resolution. The extended/wide QVGA (WQVGA) is an odd resolution and I am not sure why AT&T's iClone can't come with VGA.

The positive thing about the Samsung/AT&T device is that it is a full-featured smartphone, unlike other iClones on the market. One can even argue that it has more features than the iPhone and allows for more advanced customizations. The Omnia runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional with Samsung customizations to make it a better consumer user experience.

Sprint's Samsung Instinct, which has been dubbed an iPhone clone, has been a huge hit for the wireless carrier. According to Engadget Mobile, Sprint has announced that the Instinct is the best selling EVDO handset ever in the first week of release.

EVDO is the technology that powers fast wireless internet on CDMA networks like Sprint and Verizon Wireless.

Samsung is also vamping up production to keep the stores stocked. At least Sprint users who want an iPhone can get a clone from their carrier.

AT&T will begin offering a high-end Windows Mobile smartphone from Samsung later this year, if an unconfirmed report is correct.

SlashPhone had recently posted a video of Samsung's TouchWiz user interface now being ported to Windows Mobile Professional by way of the recently announced Samsung Omnia.

While the interface does look intriguing and seems to be somewhat closely integrated into Windows Mobile with several customized applications, there seems to be a bit of a delay launching apps. It has the look and feel of the interface on the iPhone, but as an iClone, it doesn't seem as polished.

The TouchWiz interface will make Samsung devices more competitive with the value-added HTC Diamond with its own customized home screen where you can have access to music and media.

I can't say for sure what the experience on either device will be like, but from our own review of the HTC Diamond here on pocketnow.com and the video of the Samsung Omnia, I personally am leaning towards the Diamond.

Tomorrow, Sprint is going to introduce the Samsung Instinct, which isn't a smartphone by most people's definitions, but is still being viewed as a strong competitor for the iPhone.

Probably not the best day to debut a smartphone as Apple kicks off its developer's conference with new iPhone buzz, but the Samsung i900 gets its debut as the Samsung Omnia. The phone was first reported as having slim and sexy design, but lacks a truly compelling reason to upgrade, unless you are a fan of fashion phones.

However, now that the specs are out, the phone features a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with face detection technology, Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, Bluetooth, WiFi, FM, GPS, HSPA at 7.2 Mbps, an accelerometer, quad-band GSM/EDGE, Samsung's TouchWiz user interface, and will be available in 8 GB and 16 GB versions.

Engadget Mobile is reporting availability as soon as later this month in certain areas while European availability will be next month.

The phone is unique in that it is the first truly advanced cameraphone on Windows Mobile from a major brand. It has face detection, auto-focus, and will sport a 5 megapixel camera. Hopefully, picture quality will be good enough to compete with the Nokia N95 and the forthcoming N96, which will also feature auto-focus.

Pretend you didn't see the headline...how many different screen resolutions do you think Windows Mobile 6 supports?

Go through it with me (but before that: note that I'm going to count 320x240 and 240x320 as the same). Of course we have the commonly found QVGA (320x240) and VGA (640x480) resolutions, plus 240x240 as found on the Palm Treo 750/700wx. Don't forget 320x320, sported by the Palm Treo 800w and Samsung i780. Then there's the old school 176x220 found in the first-generation Smartphones (ugh, those screens were terrible). And then we have the XPERIA X1, which kicks a very high WVGA (800x480) resolution. Ok, that's 6, how did I come up with 8?

Look at the chart below, harvested from MSDN. Turns out that WinMo 6 also supports 480x480 square resolution (doubt we'll ever see this), plus 240x400, also known as WQVGA, which can be found on the upcoming Samsung i900. I don't think anyone can ever say that WinMo OEMs are limited by the amount of pixels they can put on the screen; that's a lot of choices.

WMExperts posted their opinion of the Samsung i900, which features Windows Mobile Professional, an extended 240 X 400 QVGA touchscreen, and an iPhone-esque look complete with a chrome frame surrounding the display. Is this phone powerful enough?

With the forthcoming release and availability of the HTC Touch, the iPhone version 2, and other phones sporting higher resolution displays, is Samsung's sexy release a little too late with QVGA?

Also, WMExperts made reference to the touchpad that resembles the one available in the Samsung i780, which has yet to appear in the US. That may be a deal-breaker for some as it is not the traditional directional pad that you click on. Instead, the touchpad works much like a trackpad on a laptop.

Apparently Samsung jumped the gun in its press release, leading to much speculation and misinformation. The press release that was obtained originally by Engadget Mobile had made mention of an "Safari browser (full browsing)" as a feature, causing many to believe that Samsung and Apple may have ported the Safari WebKit browser and not just any variant of the WebKit standard.

However, Engadget Mobile did receive confirmation and clarification from Samsung that the browser is not a porting of Safari, similar to those on the iPhone or iPod Touch. Instead, Samsung states:

"Actually, L870 is equipped with S60 OSS browser, also known as S60 safari browser because both are using same webcore platform. Sorry again for the unclear specification, and bothering you with this."

Is there actually such a thing as an S60 safari browser? Something must have been lost in translation between Samsung PR in Korea and Samsung USA or even the clarification is meant to be misleading to compete with the iPhone on browser functionality and brand recognition.

The original Samsung Blackjack from AT&T was quite a popular form factor. Even though AT&T now has the updated and nicer looking Blackjack II, Sprint has released the Samsung ACE, which is very similar to the original Blackjack. The biggest difference between the ACE and the Blackjack is that the ACE has EVDO/CDMA support as well as GSM/GPRS, plus a few other interesting custom enhancements. Did Sprint get the ACE right? What's your pick in terms of candybar devices with forward facing keyboards? Each device has its pros and cons. The Samsung i780/i788 has an innovative trackpad instead of a directional pad that some may not like, the iPAQ 900 series may not even come to the US considering the fate of the 600 series due to rumored quality issues; and the Treo 800w has a lot to offer but depending on the date of release may not be as competitive as other devices depending if GPS will be onboard.

Samsung has announced the development of a cell phone that is powered by a fuel cell that uses water to begin the chemical process.

Recently, I purchased a Samsung BlackJack II because I wanted to get my hands on a Windows Mobile 6 Standard device. That, and I thought that the BlackJack II is one good looking device! As with all new devices I purchase, I go through all the possible settings that are available and I stumbled upon a nice feature. The BlackJack II can be used as a USB Mass Storage device! To enable this feature, you just need to do the following:

1. Go to "Start"
2. Navigate down to "Settings"
3. Scroll down to "More" or click right on the D-Pad
4. Select "Connections"
5. Scroll down to "USB"
6. Tap on the right D-Pad key until you get to "Mass Storage"
7. Tap "Done"

This is a great feature as it will allow you to view the contents on your MicroSDHC card without having to sync your device through ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center. This will save you time if you need to see the contents of your card quickly. Just be sure remember to set your USB connection back to ActiveSync if you want ...

Reports from the::unwired reveal that the Samsung i900 is coming soon, but not to the US. The tri-band GSM and single-band UMTS smartphone features a 3.5" touchscreen with an irregular resolution of 240 X 400. The device also features a 5 megapixel autofocus camera, an unusually high resolution with autofocus for a Windows Mobile device.

The i900 will have 8 GB of on-board storage as well as WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, and an FM receiver.

If you're in Europe, you may want to give this Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional touchscreen phone a second look.

The specs haven't been fully confirmed and may change with a final release version. The release date isn't known as well, but the::unwired speculates that it may be a summer release for Samsung.

As all wireless devices for sale in the United States has to pass through the FCC for regulatory approval, FCC documents provide some insight into forthcoming devices. One such device is the Samsung i788. the::unwired is speculating that the i788 is a variant of the Europe-only Samsung i780, a Windows Mobile Professional phone that looks like a BlackJack II, but has a touchscreen.

Usually, Samsung phones on the AT&T network has a number scheme that ends with a 7. The i788 ends with an 8 so it will interesting if this model makes it over to AT&T. T-Mobile is the other national GSM carrier in the US and is in the process of deploying its 3G networks as well.

If the i788 makes it to AT&T, it will be one of two devices with a candybar form factor, touchscreen, and QWERTY for factor. The other device is the Palm Treo 750, which is getting dated.

The Samsung Instinct is clearly intended to be Sprint's chief iPhone competitor. Brighthand's Ed Hardy was at the launch, and shares his first thoughts on this device, as well as a video overview of some of its features.
