Samsung's next smartphone, the S60-powered InnoV8, will take direct aim at Nokia's N95/N96 models by having the most features that can be packed in a device and still be made pocketable.

What do the HP iPAQ hx4700, Samsung Omnia, and Samsung i780/i788 have in common? I'm sure you've read the headline by now - they all have on-screen cursors that are activated by either a touchpad (iPAQ) or an optical joystick (both Samsung devices).

Most of the time, you'll find a Windows Mobile Standard device in my pocket for one reason: I can't easily use any Professional (touchscreen) device with one-hand. But in my testing of the Omnia, I found using the device with one hand as easy as on a Motorola Q9h, or a BlackJack II. This means of interaction with the device, which essentially mimics the experience you have with a mouse pointer on a laptop or desktop, allows for a level of control and one-handed usability that I've yet to find on a touchscreen Windows Mobile phone. With the Omnia, I could operate any function of the device without moving my thumb from the optical joystick (unless of course I needed to enter text).

If it's so great, why haven't we seen more devices with on-screen mouse pointers? In the case of the hx4700 back in 2004, the ...

Brandon writes, "I think there's an unspoken race among WinMo OEMs to add as many features as possible to new devices. And hey, we're not complaining. The Omnia i900 from Samsung, which unapologetically looks like an iPhone, has a robust list of capabilities. Features like a wide QVGA screen, up to 16GB of onboard storage, an accelerometer for automatic screen rotation, and an optical joystick for easy one-handed operation make us pay a lot of attention to the device. This is the review you want to read to discover all the neat tricks that the Omnia can do." Read on for our comprehensive review of the Omnia i900!

In this video, we cover the unique and interesting features of the Omnia i900. We go over the TouchWiz widget-based Today screen, which although is highly customizable, doesn't contain many useful widgets such as weather, stocks, or a way to see your next appointment.

Then we take a look at the optical joystick, which makes one-hand operation of the device easy and comfortable. Something I forgot to mention in the video is that the optical joystick can be pressed inward to select objects on the screen.

We also cover the utility of the accelerometer which will rotate the screen in all parts of the operating system, including Opera Mobile 9.5, which comes on the device as the full version.

Going into settings we find that the Omnia allows for a fair amount of customization in terms of system colors, sensitivity of the accelerometer, and the degree of vibration feedback when you tap items on the screen.

Coming up soon is the full review!

In this video I cover the hardware of the Omnia i900. The screen is 3.2", compared to 3.5" on the iPhone and 2.8" on the Touch Diamond. It's a thin phone with just a 12.5mm profile, versus 11.3mm on the iPhone, and 11.5mm on the Touch Diamond. The device feels quite light weight at 122 grams.

This is the only WinMo touchscreen phone I've seen without an inbuilt stylus. There is an external stylus that you can carry around on the lanyard hook, but to avoid having ornaments dangle from your phone, you can use your finger or the optical joystick to navigate with the device.

The microSD card is behind the battery cover, which makes it a bit awkward to change cards. The battery is 1440mAh, which seems like an ample amount of juice for a phone of this type.

    More to come!

The Omnia i900 from Samsung is a really unique Windows Mobile Pro device. It has an insane 8-16GB of internal storage space, a crazy-high 5MP camera sensor with auto focus, a Wide QVGA screen (that's 400x240), an optical mouse pad, an accelerometer for screen rotation, and a lot of interesting built-in software (including Opera 9.5). After a few minutes of using the device, I can tell that a lot of thought went into the Omnia i900 and it may turn out to be a winner.

And because it's a quadband phone, those in the US can use it in 3G glory (though right this minute, I'm only getting EDGE for some reason). It's available now as an import for sky-high prices ($850+), it's rumored to be coming to AT&T which would present a much lower subsidized price.

I have more videos planned before our full review of the Omnia. More coming very soon.

Samsung i800 ALP CancelledThe uncertain future facing the ALP aka the Access Linux Platform, the latest effort from the entity formerly known as PalmSource and now part of Japan's Access Software, just became increasingly grim if the latest report from the Inquirer is correct.

In short, the article claims that the Samsung i800, reported in February of this year, and fully expected to be the market's first ALP-based handset, has been cancelled. Edelman, ironically enough the PR company of both Palm Inc. and Orange, simply stated that:

"Since the original project was defined back in February there have been a number of advances in mobile technology. As a consequence the i800 has been withdrawn in order to take advantage of these to prepare a more competitive Linux mobile."

All About The Samsung Omnia This is one really great phone and there’s been a lot of news about it this past week. So much so that rather than doing a headline for each one, I decided to consolidate them all into this one post. For starters, the::unwired has found out that the Samsung Omnia variants (i900, i900v and i908) and is now GCF (Global Certification Forum) approved. This means that they are network and GSM/3GPP standard compliant and support quadband GSM, UTRA FDDI (UMTS at 2100 MHz

It looks like the first review of the WQVGA touchscreen Samsung i900 Omnia is in over at the::unwired with Arne over there giving a pretty high first impression. The camera is one of the best Windows Mobile camera with a bright LED and 5 megapixels. HSDPA, a fast ROM, widescreen display, aGPS, FM radio, and the Samsung Widgets help to make the device stand out above the pack. I kind of like the Widget actually although I am not sure how well it works on such a narrow screen.

The detailed review and videoview could be seen over at the::unwired.

Samsung has really been blowing the competition out when it comes to multimedia capabilities, in particular photo and video capturing. The new Samsung i8510 will probably never make its debut in the United States, but it is definitely drool-worthy.

Engadget Mobile is reporting that the device will feature an 8-megapixel camera, 120 frames per second video capturing at QVGA resolution, dual LED flashes, and DivX and DLNA certification. In addition, it runs on the S60 platform, which is the same platform that powers Nokia's smartphones like the N95. Hardware-wise, the device has most others beat: FM radio, WiFi, GPS, 16 GB of storage with expandable memory card.

It'd be nice if good ol' Sammy would share the same high-res photo love for Windows Mobile.

    Jul 14,2008

WMExperts is reporting that the Samsung i907 has passed FCC testing. Samsung models ending in a 7 usually are headed to AT&T. While passing the FCC hurdles does not necessarily mean a carrier release as the device can be canned at any point, it does show some promise given that the BlackJack II has now been on the market for some time and probably needs a refresh.

Not much is known as far as specs or details. However, there are speculations across the internet that AT&T will adopt a North American-specific model of the i780/788. The phone features a square 320 X 320 touchscreen display similar to the Palm Treo 800w currently just released on Sprint.

Also of note, unlike Palm, Samsung's iteration will come with a flush screen and probably not as many enhancements as the well-lauded Palm enhancements. Instead, Samsung will pobably add its own "touch interface" to make the device more finger-friendly rather than adding solid user applications in the case of the Treo 800w to make it a compelling business no-frills device.
