With rumors swirling around Microsoft lurking to buy BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, some are postulating what the marriage would look like for both BlackBerry and Windows Mobile handsets. It looks like Pharos may put some imagination to play, bringing two handsets to market, one of which looks like a BlackBerry Bold meets Windows Mobile. Both handsets eature a VGA touchscreen and retail for $530 unlocked according to Gizmodo.

The Traveller 127 is a BlackBerry style device (even the keys on the keyboard look BlackBerry) with a trackball for navigating the device in the middle flanked by a Home and OK keys as well as Send and End keys. The device has HSDPA, GPS, and comes with Pharos' Smart Navigator solution. The Pharos Traveller 127 looks like it has the BlackBerry body and the brains of Windows Mobile technology.

Ever since the RIM BlackBerry Storm was introduced in early October, I've received a ton of questions about the smartphone. A majority of the queries have been about availability and pricing, but there have been some more specific questions about features, competitor comparisons, and whether it will come to other carriers.

Given all the interest in the BlackBerry Storm, I decided to round up some of the most frequently asked questions about the first touch-screen BlackBerry and share them with you in this Ask the Editors post. I've tried to answer them to the best of my ability, but please realize there are just some things I can't completely answer, whether it's because the companies aren't talking (trust me, I'm trying) or because I haven't had any real hands-on time with the device. This means that users can get instant updates on applications without having to sign in and refresh every time. Some uses for this would instant messaging and news applications, and news readers.

According to MobileBurn, BlackBerry Web Signals technology leverages BlackBerry push APIs to enable content providers to push relevant and timely alerts to BlackBerry smartphone users based on a customer's opt-in preferences. Several members of the BlackBerry developer community are already set to launch services powered by BlackBerry Web Signals technology.

A similar technology was said to have been launched with the last iPhone firmware update, but Apple pulled the software at the last minute.

In what is undoubtedly a sign of the massive impact of the iPhone, Apple CEO Steve Jobs announced yesterday during its quarterly conference call that iPhones outsold BlackBerries devices during the last quarter. In their most recent quarter, Research in Motion (RIM) reported selling 6.1 million BlackBerry devices, while Apple just announced sales of 6.9 million iPhones. In roughly the same period, Palm reported overall smartphones sales (Treo and Centro combined) of 1,029,000 units during the quarter.

The numbers are quite staggering considering that Apple has been selling the iPhone for only about 15 months and has already exceeded its own goal of selling 10 million units in 2008. The data adds up to Apple rising to the world's third largest mobile phone supplier measured by revenue.

SANTA CLARA, Calif.--Mike Lazaridis, Research In Motion's co-founder and co-CEO, has just given the 700 registered developers at the first-ever BlackBerry Developer Conference sound but strange advice. The key to successful BlackBerry development isn't just good programming, Lazaridis told the room, it's physics.

Very specific physics, it turns out. Lazaridis pointed to an image of a box with the words Bandwidth, Capacity, Performance, and Battery Life, written in each corner. These are the four principles of BlackBerry's "physics," he said. If developers push too hard to achieve high broadband speeds, for instance, capacity drops. On individual devices, there is a trade-off between battery life and performance.

"This is one box that it's wise not to think outside," Lazaridis joked.

Lazaridis' insight is one reason that scores of developers have gathered at the Silicon Valley conference. Another is meeting with technical experts for hands-on advice to ready their applications for the sleek BlackBerry Bold and touch-screen BlackBerry Storm--slated to hit stores within the next few weeks--and for the BlackBerry application store--anticipated to debut in March 2009.
