Although the BlackBerry devices made by Research in Motion have long been held one of the best email and messaging devices with some of the best keyboards in the industry, it had limitations. Research in Motion is upgrading the consumer BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) to 2.5, and along with the ROM upgrade to 4.5 in September, consumers should be able to start enjoying features long held by Windows Mobile users.

According to The Boy Genius Report, those features include:

-You can save attachments including audio and video formats.
-Full list of supported downloadable attachments are: .doc, .ppt., .xls, .wpd, .txt, .html, .pdf, .zip, and the aforementioned audio / video formats.
-File size of attachments is limited to 3MB.
-The 4.5 OS will be “available for all BlackBerry’s in September.” This includes the 8100, 8800, 8820, 8300, 8310, 8120, and the 8110. No 8320 love?
-“If a BlackBerry launches before September, it will have 4.5 software.”
-Addition of push AOL email and Hotmail/MSN accounts.

During its most recent financial quarter, Research In Motion (RIM) once again saw its revenues and profits more than twice what they were a year ago. But that wasn't enough to satisfy investors.

The BlackBerry Bold looks like another iPhone black slab with chrome borders. Engadget Mobile had some hands-on time with the unit and walked away quite impresse.

The BlackBerry Bold seems to have a better keyboard design than the BlackBerry 8800 that it replaces. While the unit seems to be improved, with additions of Pocket Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, hopefully this time around, there won't be any more BlackBerry outages. Engadget Mobile noted that the unit had nice response times.

RIM recently unveiled the BlackBerry Bold, an upcoming smartphone that will offer a number of firsts for this long-running product line. Ed Hardy was able to spend some time with a pre-release unit, and shares his first impressions here.

According to The Boy Genius Report, the Bold isn't off to such a bold start and will be delayed until at least mid-August due to problems on AT&T's networks. The issues mainly are battery life on the high speed network and overheating.

With the iPhone soon to be going 3G and Windows Mobile having 3G for a while now, Research in Motion is feeling the pressure to get a 3G BlackBerry device out to the masses.

There's good news and bad news for those in the U.S. who are eager to get RIM's latest, the BlackBerry Bold. The good news is that this smartphone will be released by AT&T, but the bad news is that this won't happen for another couple of months.

Those following Research in Motion's upcoming device know that RIM is working on a next-generation touchscreen BlackBerry. Initially, those onlookers have speculated this to be RIM's strategy to compete with the iPhone, especially in the prosumer space and as the iPhone will be entering the corporate space with Exchange ActiveSync licensing from Microsoft. However, a closer look reveals the BlackBerry to have a touchscreen and sliding QWERTY keyboard, not unlike the HTC TyTN II.

Is the new sliding BlackBerry featured on RIMarkable aimed at the iPhone, or is this aimed at a more aggressive Microsoft that is projecting great growth in the near future? The sliding form factor was popularized in the SideKick, which Microsoft had since acquired, and on HTC devices in the smartphone arena.

More importantly, will RIM be able to master the sliding form factor? HTC devices running atop Windows Mobile Professional have been plagued with slow screen rotation. Hopefully, RIM's operating system will take less toll on system resources and provide an adequate user experience.

The experience you get from interacting with a Windows Mobile devices comes from the software. We know this because you can get the platform in a dozen form factors, and the experience is generally the same. The same can be said about Symbian. For WinMO and Symbian, it's the software powering the device that creates the experience, not the hardware.

An iPhone is an iPhone because of the hardware and the software. Could there be an iPhone that has a hardware keyboards? Well, that wouldn't be an iPhone.

The same model applies to BlackBerry - a platform that has been attached to the same hardware form factor (candy-bar with QWERTY) since its inception. It's clear that what makes BlackBerry a BlackBerry is, like the iPhone, both hardware and software. Oddly, RIM is betting against this idea by releasing a full touchscreen device with no keyboard.

Research in Motion (RIM) is upping the game with the soon to be released BlackBerry 9000, which is rumored to have the name the BlackBerry Bold, much like the 8300 series became the BlackBerry Curve. The Bold is seen as an advanced PDA that combines the consumer multimedia of the BlackBerry Curve and the professional looks from the BlackBerry 8800 series.
