Following up on yesterday's news item on the possible upcoming availability of two new Sprint Centro colors, some official looking press shots have emerged of both new offerings courtesy of the SprintUsers forum. The high-quality leaked images show the green to be a rather muted, almost "wasabi" or "pistachio" in appearance. The rose-colored Palm Centro definitely has a unique look in comparison to the older pink Centro, with a much darker appearance. Read on for the full sized shots.
No word if there might be any additional software-related changes to accompany the new Treos but it's fairly safe to assume that purchasers of these new colors will likely receive the latest ROM version with the recent Sprint update pre-installed along with standard Google Maps My Location functionality.

In short, Chen claims that the new Treo Pro is merely a stopgap devicea "floatation device" as he calls itto bridge the gap between Palm's Windows Mobile-heavy 2008 and their "hopefully revolutionary" device(s) next year, presumably running the new "Nova" Palm OS replacement. In his editorial, Chen posts several notable quotes from a telecom industry analyst, a Palm spokesperson, and Peter Hoddie, the president of streaming media software developer Kinoma. The wide array of responses quoted in the article touch not only on the new Treo Pro but also Palm's current activities and future outlook.
The Treo Pro is Palm's second new device of 2008. The Treo Pro brings something to Palm's lineup that has been sorely needed in recent times, a dramatically refreshed smartphone that delivers a modern new look with the features to match. The Treo Pro runs Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 and also makes its mark as the thinnest Treo smartphone to date. It further enhances its profile with a pleasant amount of innovative new features packed into the Palm's most attractive new design in some time.
Unlike many past Palm smartphone introductions the Treo Pro is premiering as an unlocked model first in most markets. The device will be made available online at Palm.com for $549 USD beginning sometime this fall. Being an unlocked device it comes with a higher than normal price tag because of the absence of carrier subsidies and discounts. However, customers do gain the option of bringing their own SIM card and phone plan to use on the GSM network (AT&T or T-Mobile in the US) of their own choice.
Palm has released an update for the Treo 800w on Sprint. The update download and detail pages can be found here. The process involves a installing and running the update file and a soft reset. It can be installed over the air by visiting palm.com/800wusbota directly on your device.
mOcean, formerly a $30 application for Palm OS, has now been permanently reduced to just under $10 for the full version. MotionApps's mOcean is an iPod emulating digital audio player for the Palm OS that also offers iTunes synchronization, skin and background support, live internet radio, podcast support, audiobooks and phone and video functionality. The program lets you browse and control music playback with an on-screen mini scroll wheel as well as the 5-way navigator. Although a free ad supported version has been available for some time, its nice to see such an excellent program come down in price.
mOcean v3.2.3 is available now for Palm OS. It comes with a free trial period and costs $9.95. It is worth noting that mOcean is only compatible with Palm OS smartphones such as the Treo and Centro, so Palm PDA diehards need to look towards PocketTunes or elsewhere for their media-playback fix. Also be sure to checkout Tim's review of v3.0.
Palm's ChannelSource reseller portal has posted a substantial bit of information on several new accessory SKUs for not only the brand-new Treo Pro but the recent Treo 800w as well.
It was widely assumed that Palm would be launching the Treo Pro at this year's event, as the show's timing coincides nicely with Palm's traditional fall release schedule in October. Palm was even listed as an exhibiting sponsor prior to the cancellation announcement. It's entirely possible that the seemingly rushed Treo Pro announcement is also related to the Digital Life show's termination.
Rumor: Palm is also prepping to release a CDMA version of the newly announced Treo Pro according to an unconfirmed statement from a Taiwan economic news publication. Cens.com is reporting:
Palm is planning to launch CDMA (code division multiple access) version of Treo Pro series phone in the future for CDMA telecom service providers, like Verizon, Wireless and Sprint. The phone will also be supplied by HTC.

Yesterday's Treo Pro announcement is the first serious sign that Palm is serious about raising the bar for their Treo line under the guidance of Jon Rubinstein. While we have seen scores of leaked photos, specs, and general device information, very little in the way of hands-on reports have emerged regarding Palm's thinnest, highest-end smartphone to date.
Both Gizmodo and Engadget Mobile have published a gallery of hands on pics. Gizmodo's report in particular has some very nice high-resolution shots and initial usage comments. The Pro's back looks extraordinarily iPhone 3G-esque and the stylus, while metal, seems a bit nubby compared to past Palm styli that have been long and thin.
This time around, the Palm Centro is being promoted with heavily discounted pricing in both CDMA formats for Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Sprint's version of the Centro, the first version of the Centro available last year and a recipient of a recent ROM update, is discounted to $19.99 with new 2yr contract. For current users looking to upgrade, Sprint's Centro is marked down to $99.99.

Palm Inc. today formally introduced the Treo Pro smartphone, its latest Treo running the Windows Mobile operating system. The Treo Pro features a streamlined design in a sleeker glossy black package coming in as the thinnest Treo released to date.
The official announcement matches up with most of the previously leaked information. The Treo Pro will be available from Vodafone and O2 in Europe(from free to EUR 399 with contract) and from Telstra in Australia (from free with contract), also will be available in an unlocked version in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific. Palm says the unlocked version will be made available in the US this fall from its online store for $549. Additional Treo Pro availability is scheduled to follow worldwide.
While most of the information contained in the article will have a familiar ring to long-time Palm watchers, there are a few revealing tidbits offered by the NYT. First, the Treo Pro is said to have a "larger keyboard" than "current models". By "current models" it is unknown if the article is referring to the fairly ample keyboards between Palm's various older Treo models (680, 700-series, and 800w) or the diminutive Centro keyboard. The Pro is also said to have Apple-esque "jewel box" packaging, a break from Palm's standard small square cardboard box no-frills Treo packaging.
