Centro LimeFollowing up on yesterday's news item on the possible upcoming availability of two new Sprint Centro colors, some official looking press shots have emerged of both new offerings courtesy of the SprintUsers forum. The high-quality leaked images show the green to be a rather muted, almost "wasabi" or "pistachio" in appearance. The rose-colored Palm Centro definitely has a unique look in comparison to the older pink Centro, with a much darker appearance. Read on for the full sized shots.

No word if there might be any additional software-related changes to accompany the new Treos but it's fairly safe to assume that purchasers of these new colors will likely receive the latest ROM version with the recent Sprint update pre-installed along with standard Google Maps My Location functionality.

For owners of Palm Treos possessing a fullsize SD, SDHC or miniSD slots, Woot Sellout has a very limited-time offer on Garmin's Mobile XT GPS navigation kit. For $49.99 + $5 shipping, users can get a very solid smartphone-based navigation solution that is compatible with every Palm OS version of the Treo ranging from the 650 to last year's 755p and the older WM-based Treo 700w/wx/750. I believe this is a slightly older Garmin bundle that the one we covered last fall. It's advisable to act fast if interested, as Woot's offerings are usually very limited quantities and sell out quickly.

Longtime Palm OS online software store Palmgear.com has experienced a sudden resurrection and has been relaunched by its new parent company PocketGear. After its closure in November of 2007 shortly after being merged into PocketGear.com, the formerly dormant PalmGear.com has been revived "under new management."

A familiar face on the Palm OS software scene since 2007, PalmGear.com maintains a storehouse of over 30,000 titles for download, although many of the older or obscure free titles have disappeared from the site during the shake-ups of the past several years.

According to an article on MSN Money, financial firm Cowen rated Palm with an outperform rating, noting Windows Mobile and the forthcoming linux-based Palm OS (not the one developed by Access) as reasons for Palm's rise.

Palm had once been the darling of the PDA community in the nineties and is starting to regain a bit of ground that it has lost with the Treo Pro. I don't know how much a new operating system will contribute to Palm's future success, but the firm has definitely made a move in the right direction focusing on hardware. It's a shame though that with the Treo Pro's good looks, Palm is mainly focusing on the enterprise market and not partnering up with a carrier in the US to release the device to a wider prosumer or consumer audience.

Wired Magazine's Gadget Lab blog has published a new editorial by Brian X. Chen entitled "Palm Needs a Savior, and Treo Pro Won't Cut It". This piece takes a harsh look at Palm's new Treo Pro, especially when compared against a slew of increasingly competitive devices from HTC, RIM, Apple, and any number of handset manufacturers.

In short, Chen claims that the new Treo Pro is merely a stopgap device—a "floatation device" as he calls it—to bridge the gap between Palm's Windows Mobile-heavy 2008 and their "hopefully revolutionary" device(s) next year, presumably running the new "Nova" Palm OS replacement. In his editorial, Chen posts several notable quotes from a telecom industry analyst, a Palm spokesperson, and Peter Hoddie, the president of streaming media software developer Kinoma. The wide array of responses quoted in the article touch not only on the new Treo Pro but also Palm's current activities and future outlook.

Palm Treo Pro Review

Friday
Aug 29,2008

Treo Pro ReviewThe Treo Pro is Palm's second new device of 2008. The Treo Pro brings something to Palm's lineup that has been sorely needed in recent times, a dramatically refreshed smartphone that delivers a modern new look with the features to match. The Treo Pro runs Windows Mobile Professional 6.1 and also makes its mark as the thinnest Treo smartphone to date. It further enhances its profile with a pleasant amount of innovative new features packed into the Palm's most attractive new design in some time.

Unlike many past Palm smartphone introductions the Treo Pro is premiering as an unlocked model first in most markets. The device will be made available online at Palm.com for $549 USD beginning sometime this fall. Being an unlocked device it comes with a higher than normal price tag because of the absence of carrier subsidies and discounts. However, customers do gain the option of bringing their own SIM card and phone plan to use on the GSM network (AT&T or T-Mobile in the US) of their own choice.

mOceanmOcean, formerly a $30 application for Palm OS, has now been permanently reduced to just under $10 for the full version. MotionApps's mOcean is an iPod emulating digital audio player for the Palm OS that also offers iTunes synchronization, skin and background support, live internet radio, podcast support, audiobooks and phone and video functionality. The program lets you browse and control music playback with an on-screen mini scroll wheel as well as the 5-way navigator. Although a free ad supported version has been available for some time, its nice to see such an excellent program come down in price.

mOcean v3.2.3 is available now for Palm OS. It comes with a free trial period and costs $9.95. It is worth noting that mOcean is only compatible with Palm OS smartphones such as the Treo and Centro, so Palm PDA diehards need to look towards PocketTunes or elsewhere for their media-playback fix. Also be sure to checkout Tim's review of v3.0.

Last week's Treo Pro announcement focused primarily on Palm's latest handset offering, with little if any attention paid to the usual arsenal of accessories traditionally announced alongside any new Palm device. With Palm's apparent renewed interest and attention to Windows Mobile coming on the heels of their recent duo of high-end WM 6.1-powered Treos, several new accessories have been announced and/or just released.

Palm's ChannelSource reseller portal has posted a substantial bit of information on several new accessory SKUs for not only the brand-new Treo Pro but the recent Treo 800w as well.

Longtime technology publisher Ziff Davis Media Inc. has canceled its 2008 DigitalLife show in New York City. Held at the Javits Convention Center, this show has been of primary interest to Palm-watchers as the venue for the official release of their "consumer-oriented" smartphone releases of 2007's Centro and the Treo 680 in 2006. The show was scheduled to run September 25th-28th. Ziff Davis cites "poor economic conditions" as the primary reason for the show's cancellation this year.

It was widely assumed that Palm would be launching the Treo Pro at this year's event, as the show's timing coincides nicely with Palm's traditional fall release schedule in October. Palm was even listed as an exhibiting sponsor prior to the cancellation announcement. It's entirely possible that the seemingly rushed Treo Pro announcement is also related to the Digital Life show's termination.

Originally, when Palm first entered the Windows Mobile world, they kept their GSM and CDMA Treo models with identical software enhancements, which Palm cleverly dubbed as part of their ease of use enhancements to Windows Mobile in order to create a Palm experience that is simpler than the traditional HTC smartphone. However, it seems that moving forward, at least with the Treo 800w on CDMA and the Treo Pro on GSM will bear some software enhancement differences. We broke story of the difference with the lack of the GPS application on the Today screen as well as the lack of a custom map application on the Treo Pro as opposed to the 800w. Now, Palm's PR firm has confirmed that those feature sets are exclusive to the Treo 800w. Buyer beware: not only is reception and type of radio used (CDMA/EVDO versus GSM/HSPA) a differentiating factor, but users should consider the Palm ease of use and if they need the software enhancement.

It's ironic that Palm now makes some of the best Windows Mobile devices in the world. When Microsoft observed the success Palm had in the handheld market in the mid-1990s, it set out to blow the little start-up out of the water with its own mobile platform. It began life as Windows CE (derisively known as "Wince"), which then became Pocket PC and now Windows Mobile. We all know the outcome of that battle. As usual, Microsoft, through sheer brute force, was able to assert its dominance over tim

Despite its high price due to lack of carrier subsidization in the US, Palm has made great strides with the Treo Pro. However, upon closer inspection, it looks like Palm focused on designing the hardware, but omitted their famous "ease of use" touches on the software side. Palm had traditionally added little software touches to make Windows Mobile more friendly and enable a smoother one-handed operation experience. Such enhancements included the Contacts search on the Today screen, the internet search on the Today screen, the silent ringer switch, and others.

Most recently, on the Treo 800w, Palm had added customized software for GPS, which includes a POI search from the Today screen and a custom mapping application. This can be clearly found on the promotional page for the Treo 800w, but is not found on the Treo Pro page. In fact, the only GPS promotion for the Treo Pro seems to be that GPS is included and will seemingly work with TeleNav.

Moreover, in addition to what seems to be the lack of GPS integration for a more "Palm" user experience based on the available web information from Palm, it seems that ...

Treo Pro Hands on PicturesYesterday's Treo Pro announcement is the first serious sign that Palm is serious about raising the bar for their Treo line under the guidance of Jon Rubinstein. While we have seen scores of leaked photos, specs, and general device information, very little in the way of hands-on reports have emerged regarding Palm's thinnest, highest-end smartphone to date.

Both Gizmodo and Engadget Mobile have published a gallery of hands on pics. Gizmodo's report in particular has some very nice high-resolution shots and initial usage comments. The Pro's back looks extraordinarily iPhone 3G-esque and the stylus, while metal, seems a bit nubby compared to past Palm styli that have been long and thin.

With Engadget Mobile reporting that Palm has just gotten around to formally announcing the Treo Pro, which has been leaked onto the internet for the past few days and has garnered a lot of love from many bloggers, it seems that noticeably absent from the party is AT&T. Gizmodo is reporting that the device will be sold unlocked through Palm's website and retail channels for $549 in the US.

While the device has great specs, I am not sure how successful the Treo Pro will be at that price. Enterprise users can get BlackBerry devices cheaper with carrier subsidies, consumers have a plethora of smartphones to choose from, and for the same specs, users can choose the Samsung i780, which may be launched on AT&T as the BlackJack 3.

Vodafone, Telstra, and O2 are all international partners and will subsidize the device, but the US is where the Palm name is most known and Palm has no launch partner here. Will Palm be strong enough to revive itself with lack of a carrier partner in the States? Will you buy the Treo Pro for $549 unlocked?

Treo ProPalm Inc. today formally introduced the Treo Pro smartphone, its latest Treo running the Windows Mobile operating system. The Treo Pro features a streamlined design in a sleeker glossy black package coming in as the thinnest Treo released to date.

The official announcement matches up with most of the previously leaked information. The Treo Pro will be available from Vodafone and O2 in Europe(from free to EUR 399 with contract) and from Telstra in Australia (from free with contract), also will be available in an unlocked version in the United States, Europe and Asia Pacific. With the long-rumored Treo Pro now officially official, Palm users and analysts alike are cautiously awaiting the company's next move. The New York Times has posted a new piece entitled "Palm, Once a Leader, Seeks Path in Smartphone Jungle" that focuses primarily on Jon Rubinstein's role as company savior as well as the company's plans to ensure that the Centro is not a one-hit wonder.

While most of the information contained in the article will have a familiar ring to long-time Palm watchers, there are a few revealing tidbits offered by the NYT. First, the Treo Pro is said to have a "larger keyboard" than "current models". By "current models" it is unknown if the article is referring to the fairly ample keyboards between Palm's various older Treo models (680, 700-series, and 800w) or the diminutive Centro keyboard. The Pro is also said to have Apple-esque "jewel box" packaging, a break from Palm's standard small square cardboard box no-frills Treo packaging.
