As expected, Palm Inc announced its second consecutive quarterly loss today. The company posted a $9.6 million dollar loss for the quarter and missed its initial revenue guidance by more than $20 million dollars. In the conference call with investors and analysts following the earnings release, Palm's CEO Ed Colligan stated the company clearly did not meet expectations primarily due to the delayed certification of the Verizon Treo 755p.Palm took a loss for the quarter of $9.6 million (or 9 cents a share), roughly in line with the warning issued earlier this month.

Filling a long-empty void in the Palm OS market for a high-quality, side-scrolling arcade shooter, Astraware's Platypus looks to be sort of a spiritual successor to the company's own Zap! 2000 series. The sample image suggests that Astraware has been somewhat influenced by the cartoony, pastel aesthetic of the classic Sega title Fantasy Zone. Both Palm OS and Windows Mobile versions will be available.
MotionApps has released a update to its mRing software. mRing is a ringtone, profile and call manager application for Treos and the Centro. The Foleo sits atop Popular Mechanics' list of flops, beating out the underwhelming Apple TV, not because of any inherent limitations or design weaknesses. Instead, Popular Mechanics claims that the Foleo was a victim of the intense scrutiny and criticism from the online blogging community. This sentiment is in direct contrast to our earlier piece on the Wall Street Journal article that reports Jon Rubinstein and a small team of executives reviewed Palm's product strategy back in the summer and made the decision to cancel the Foleo before it hit the market.
A new Wall Street Journal article has just appeared to confirm the job cuts at Palm while shedding some light on the slew of problems facing the beleaguered mobile computing firm. The piece is definitely a must-read for both fans and critics of Palm as it reveals that the long-sluggish handheld manufacturer is finally attempting to mount a serious attempt to regain lost market share.
Dated December 13th, "Apple's 'Podfather' Now Aims to Revive a Wilting Palm" is written by Pui-Wing Tam. The piece offers some interesting insight into the final days of the Centro's development cycle as well as the sweeping changes occurring these days at Palm Inc. According to the WSJ, Jon Rubinstein, just recently arrived at Palm, wasted no time in making his presence felt. He requested several late-stage running changes be made to the device and ordered Palm employees to work more closely with the device's ODM partner. The WSJ piece then goes on to state that the Centro shipped to Sprint a month earlier than expected and has been the recipient of some of the strongest reviews of any Palm ...
With the final surge of holiday sales prior to Christmas about to commence, good deals are to be had for both conventional PDAs as well as smartphones from a variety of retailers, especially the big brick & mortar chains. The popular new Palm Centro, available exclusively with Sprint for the time being, is about to conclude its first three months on market and discounts on the device are finally starting to appear. A leaked image from the upcoming Best Buy sales circular, dated December 16th-22nd, shows an in-store offer for the Sprint Centro for just a rock-bottom $50 "out the door" price with 2 year contract.
Pictures of the disassembled circuitry of the inside of the Palm Centro have been posted online courtesy of the FCC. The images are a required to be submitted as part of the FCC approval process and show a up close, inside look at the device. Read on for the full gallery.
Despite the lack of any commitment or rumors of new handhelds from Palm, major retailers are continuing to crank out major discounts on Palm PDAs. This time around, both the Palm Tungsten E2 and TX are substantially discounted for Best Buy's weekly flyer. The prices on both units are identical to this week's Staples offer and similar to what was offered by the Palm Store's "Black Friday" sale last month but without the free bundled accessories. The BestBuy sale prices are also good at BestBuy.com with free shipping included until the end of the month.
The Palm TX is currently on sale for an ultra-low $199.00 after a $115 instant rebate off of Best Buy's strangely higher-than-MSRP TX price of $314.99. The Palm TX, alongside the Z22, is the most recent of Palm's remaining PDA lineup, having been introduced in October 2005 and featuring both Bluetooth and wi-fi alongside OS 5.4.9, 128MB of RAM and a 320x480 LCD.
Palm currently employs around 1,247 people. While we don't have an official confirmation at this time, a few ex-emplyees have come forward with claims that the layoffs are worldwide and could number in the hundreds. The company had their last round of layoffs back in June, with reports indicating around 100 people were let go.
TreoCentral forum member Malatesta has taken it upon himself to do the heavy lifting of persusing the extensive FCC archives and posted the fruit of some extensive analysis of Palms recent FCC filings. Recently declassified documents contain some vague references to Palm models currently in development and help to shed some light on what has become a very uncertain period for future Palm devices. As usual, all of this information combines a great deal of speculation based largely on a very small amount of official information and earlier rumors and spy photographs. The information contained within should be treated only as speculation and conjecture, not an actual Palm product roadmap. Read on for the details.
Palm has released a new feature update for the Cingular/AT&T branded Treo 680 smartphone. The v2.11 ROM update brings a large number of updates and even includes some new features and functionality such as a push to talk support. Some of the device enhancements include improved Bluetooth wireless performance for some headsets and car kits, improved audio quality, and media file functionality in Messaging. Read on for a full list of details.According to Sprint support the problem is caused when a customer's password is set incorrectly or the ISP email server is unavailable. Sprint says they are working with SEVEN (the Sprint Mobile email provider) on a update. A over the air download will be released sometime in mid-december.

The myriad of bad news facing Palm, Inc. rests predominantly on the shoulders of a previously unspecified device's failure to pass Verizon's stringent testing and certification process. The Barron's article confirms the suspicions of the PIC faithful as the device in question being the ill-fated Verizon Treo 755p, a handset whose Verizon debut has been constantly rumored since prior to the device's Sprint launch back in May.

Just a two short months after the official unveiling of Palms latest smartphone, the Garnet-powered Palm Centro on the Sprint CDMA network, the diminutive device has received its first official accolade. The Strategy Analysis Wireless Device Lab has bestowed the title of "Most Appealing Innovative Design" to the Centro.
No further word from the Lab on why the Centro specifically bests its larger-but-similar Treo brethren in usability and design, as it still lacks some commonplace features found on nearly all other mobile handsets such as native voice dialing. Perhaps the sparkly ruby red color scheme really does make a world of difference?
Palm says the projected revenue shortfall is primarily due to a delay in shipping an unnamed product they has expected to have certified within the quarter. While we can't get a confirmation, the delay is likely the debut of the Treo 755p on Verizon which has been in rumor and pre-announcement limbo since June.
A representative for Palm developer relations says that an API for determining cell tower IDs has always been on Palm devices, however it was private. Palm says they are now working to make the API public, which requires a change to the ROM, so My Location will be available on newer Palm OS phones. Palm would only commit to say that a update will be made available for the Palm Centro at some point and the API features would be included on Palm OS phones in the future.

The 2.1MB application file unfortunately does not include any widgets, users will have to download each one individually from the developers website. There are 23 widgets available at this time, with almost all of them being relatively simple rss headline displays from popular news sites. The non-headline widget choices include a fortune cookie and magic eight-ball simulator. The company lists a weather display and world clock among the upcoming releases. The website seems to indicate plans to release tools for third party widget development, so hopefully the current limited selection will eventually improve.
