Michael Mace has published a new editorial on his Mobile Opportunity blog. The fascinating piece is less editorial and more of an up-to-the-minute analysis of the ailing mobile software industry from the perspective of a seasoned mobile tech executive. Long-time Palm watchers will recognize Mr. Mace as the former CCO and VP of Product Planning at Palm, Inc. as well as VP of Strategic Marketing at PalmSource and director of Mac Platform Marketing at Apple.

While I highly recommend anyone with even a passing interest to not only the Palm-conomy but the wireless industry in general read the full piece, Mr. Mace’s summary analysis is that he feels the influence of the carriers is choking what little momentum native mobile apps possessed in the halcyon days of the late 1990s and early 2000s. In short, Mr. Mace advocates any remaining mobile developer to move to web-based services due to the myriad of competing carriers, numerous semi-interoperable standards, and a glut of feuding OSes.

Despite the fact that the Centro CDMA version has hit the ground running as one of the most popular new Palm OS devices in quite some time, the GSM version of Palm’s Centro smartphone only became available last week. Sprint enjoyed a period of exclusivity for the Centro that lasted more than three months, only ending in this month’s announcement of unlocked Centro sales commencing in Europe as well as a version for AT&T wireless in the United States.

Some light can possible be shed on the reasons for the tardy GSM Centro in some recently-released FCC filings. As posted by Engadget Mobile, these filings reveal some rather interesting details. First of all, the Centro’s internal name is the Treo 685, which is exactly what some earlier rumors had suggested and we discussed in a December report. This comes as no surprise whatsoever since the CDMA version is coined the "Treo 690" (presumably the EVDO radio gives the CDMA version the advantage of a higher model number!).

Treo and Palm Centro Software AppsOne grievance I often hear is that the Palm OS is so out of shape and antiquated, an OS well past its prime if you will. While I won't dispute that the Palm OS has seriously outlived its prime, with a few additional applications the Palm OS based smartphones can match, and in many cases vastly outperform the competition. Whether your an old time palmhead or just picked up your first Centro there is bound to be some software you can use to liven up your smartphone. In this article I highlight some of the top notch, must have Palm OS titles for your Treo or Centro.

Palm Centro New ColorsCapping a busy week of Palm Centro activity is a hint as to what might be some upcoming new colors for the Centro. An official Palm training guide for Palm retail channel partners has revealed no less than four colors of (presumably) unlocked Centros alongside the existing AT&T 'glacial white'. This varied color palette should give GSM customers the world over plenty of opportunities to find a Centro to suit their particular aesthetic style.

The Centros shown on Palm's online resource tutorial appear to be an arctic white with grey buttons (similar to the existing white Treo 680), a bright red similar to the red Treo 680 formerly offered, and dark blue seemingly identical to the Sprint Treo 755p. A matte black Centro is also on display, presumably the “obsidian black” model and the current white with green buttons scheme from AT&T rounds out the lineup. All of the units depicted are GSM units, based on their GSM-exclusive phone app screen. Read on for a larger screenshot of all five colors.

I think 2007 will be the year where mobile technology vendors proved that inexpensive doesn't necessarily mean cheap and unusable. It happened with the Asus Eee PC and then again with Palm's Centro for Sprint. The trend continues in 2008 now that a Palm Centro has arrived on AT&T's GSM network. This $99 Palm OS smartphone has definitely impressed me over the past few days of hands-on use, but I'm just getting started. Remember, in my years of using mobile tech, I've never purchased a Palm

A recent report from ChangeWave Research into cellphone customer satisfaction has ranked Palm dead last. In a January 2008 survey of 4,182 customers, only 30% of respondents using a Palm phone reported being "very satisfied" with their device. By contrast, first-place winner Apple's cultists customers came back with a stratospheric 72% and RIM a respectable 55%.

This trend has been apparent since two surveys previous, beginning with the ChangeWave report from July '07 that ranked Palm second-last. Most troubling for Palm, however, is that the popularity of the new Centro - available for two-and-a-half months prior to the survey - does not seem to be reflected in the satisfaction ranking.
