While I highly recommend anyone with even a passing interest to not only the Palm-conomy but the wireless industry in general read the full piece, Mr. Maces summary analysis is that he feels the influence of the carriers is choking what little momentum native mobile apps possessed in the halcyon days of the late 1990s and early 2000s. In short, Mr. Mace advocates any remaining mobile developer to move to web-based services due to the myriad of competing carriers, numerous semi-interoperable standards, and a glut of feuding OSes.

Some light can possible be shed on the reasons for the tardy GSM Centro in some recently-released FCC filings. As posted by Engadget Mobile, these filings reveal some rather interesting details. First of all, the Centros internal name is the Treo 685, which is exactly what some earlier rumors had suggested and we discussed in a December report. This comes as no surprise whatsoever since the CDMA version is coined the "Treo 690" (presumably the EVDO radio gives the CDMA version the advantage of a higher model number!).
One grievance I often hear is that the Palm OS is so out of shape and antiquated, an OS well past its prime if you will. While I won't dispute that the Palm OS has seriously outlived its prime, with a few additional applications the Palm OS based smartphones can match, and in many cases vastly outperform the competition. Whether your an old time palmhead or just picked up your first Centro there is bound to be some software you can use to liven up your smartphone. In this article I highlight some of the top notch, must have Palm OS titles for your Treo or Centro.
Capping a busy week of Palm Centro activity is a hint as to what might be some upcoming new colors for the Centro. An official Palm training guide for Palm retail channel partners has revealed no less than four colors of (presumably) unlocked Centros alongside the existing AT&T 'glacial white'. This varied color palette should give GSM customers the world over plenty of opportunities to find a Centro to suit their particular aesthetic style.
The Centros shown on Palm's online resource tutorial appear to be an arctic white with grey buttons (similar to the existing white Treo 680), a bright red similar to the red Treo 680 formerly offered, and dark blue seemingly identical to the Sprint Treo 755p. A matte black Centro is also on display, presumably the obsidian black model and the current white with green buttons scheme from AT&T rounds out the lineup. All of the units depicted are GSM units, based on their GSM-exclusive phone app screen. Read on for a larger screenshot of all five colors.
