Very few Windows Mobile devices have TV-out functionality, and the i-mate 9502 is one of them. It's done via a miniUSB to composite cable, which lets you connect to a TV, projector, or monitor. You can also use the white and red audio connectors to output sound to an external source. Though it's hard to tell in the video, VGA resolution stretched on a high resolution TV or projector may look decent from afar, but up close, it's quite blurry, and having a few pixels cut off from the left side of the screen is annoying.

I could see the TV-out being useful for mobile professionals who don't want to bring in the laptop for a presentation, or the power user/traveler who stores many movies on his device and wants to watch them on a larger screen.

This is a quick video I took shortly after unboxing the i-mate Ultimate 9502 that shows how to install the SIM card and battery. It then offers a walk through of the opening screens you can expect to see. Fortunately, i-mate didn't clutter the Today screen with trialware and useless plugins. The video reveals that although the 9502 feels quite snappy in its ability to render icons and bring up menus, it still suffers from slow screen rotation.

Today the UPS man dropped off i-mate's top of the line, the Ultimate 9502. It is a quad-band GSM device which packs a 400MHz Qualcomm processor, 256MB ROM, 128MB RAM, a 2.8" VGA screen, GPS, WiFi, Bluetooth, TV-Out, a 3MP camera, front-facing camera, and a large 1660mAh battery to power it all. I'm sure you'll agree that the Ultimate 9502 looks really good on paper.

I've always been excited about the Ultimate 9502, yet skeptical at the same time that i-mate could pack all of this functionality into the device, and keep the device usable, fast, and battery efficient. It's one of the very few no-compromise Windows Mobile Professional devices out there in terms of features, and it brings a first: the only Windows Mobile phone with a Sidekick-like flip-up screen.

I've only been using the device for a few hours, but I can tell you that the device is impressive. It's probably the quickest Windows Mobile Pro device I've ever used (which still isn't saying much), and I'm starting to get used to the tiny keyboard. More coverage to come.

It's been since October that we first heard tell of the high-end i-mate Ultimate 9502, and the naysayers among us could have sworn that, in typical i-mate fashion, it would become vaporware.

We'll, be prepared to be surprised: it's on sale. Or at least in Dubai. The Gear Diary is reporting that Kaz 911 just purchased one, and has posted several unboxing pictures of it.

His thoughts? While he likes the VGA screen, he thinks it to be a bit small (at 2.8") for such a large device. He also mentions that the device "feels slow" and the screen rotation "can take a while." He also didn't find the call quality to be high, and said that the "speaker is crap" compared to Nokia N-series devices. Let's hope he has high standards because I really wanted to like this device.
