DigiTimes is reporting that the next battlefront on mobile handhelds will be on the user interface experience and making it more touch-friendly, with two players aiming squarely at the consumer market--HTC and Asustek. With the launch of the
Touch HD, HTC is focusing on the multimedia experience. Asustek's upcoming Galaxy handheld will closely resemble the Samsung Omnia, adding a 5-megapixel camera and possibly a touch user interface.
Asustek's forthcoming smartphone is branded under the Asus name and will carry the brand name of Galaxy 7. According to
XDA-Developers, it will retain a similar form factor to the Samsung Omnia, but will be rumored to have a stainless steel frame, accelerometer, trackball, tri-band 3G (but not US compliant), quad-band EDGE/GSM, 5-megapixel camera, aGPS/GPS, and a large 3.5" WVGA screen that matches the Touch HD and EXPERIA X1 among others.

As you can see from the video - TouchFLO "2D" (which isn't an official term out of HTC) isn't working 100% yet, or at least that is the case on my AT&T Tilt and Verizon XV6900. That said, if you're looking for a truer TouchFLO 3D-like experience on your HTC WinMo device (and that includes: HTC Touch, Touch Cruise, Touch Dual, Hermes, Kaiser, Artemis, Herald, and Trinity), this may be a good bet.
You can thank the brilliant minds at
XDA-Devs for extracting the files from the Touch 3G. If you want to skip the long thread, zip right to the post with
download links. Run the CAB on your device, reboot, and that's it.
If you want another way to spruce up your touchscreen WinMo device in TouchFLO 3D-goodness, take a look at
Throttle Launcher.

With the new crop of lower-priced HTC devices like the
Touch 3G and the
Touch Viva, HTC decided to save on graphics processing and used a new form of TouchFLO called TouchFLO 2D, which is similar to the glitzy TouchFLO 3D sans animation. This helps to keep the device snappy and still provide a cool user interface layer over Windows Mobile. Now, the good folks over at
XDA-Developers have ported TouchFLO 2D over to older HTC devices and should work on most HTC hardware. The coding has not been ported to non-HTC devices.
To download the files, you can visit
XDA-Developers.

With the
announcement of the high-resolution new Touch HD from HTC, we also have a modified TouchFLO 3D to go along with it.
Because the screen of the Touch HD is 160 pixels taller than the Touch Diamond and Touch Pro, more data can be shown in one screen. So for the weather tab, HTC has put the 5-day forecast and current conditions all in one screen on the Touch HD, rather than on a second page accessed via the left soft key as found on the other TouchFLO 3D devices.
The newly added Stock tab keeps you informed of the latest stock quotes, while the connected Home screen puts e-mail, messages and calendar only a finger-stroke away.
Also new to TouchFLO 3D for the Touch HD is the inclusion of a stocks tab, which we applaud. Nice.

While the
Touch 3G upgrades the radio to the original Touch by adding 3G and TouchFLO 3D, HTC is also upgrading the original Touch without 3G. Codenamed the Opal, the device is now being touted as the HTC Viva. According to
Engadget, the Viva will be an HTC's keyboard-less low-end unit, keeping the EDGE radio with quad-band connectivity, GPS, 2-megapixel camera, 256 MB of ROM, WiFi, and adding a special version of TouchFLO that doesn't require the hardware needed for TouchFLO 3D found on the more expensive Touch Diamond and Touch Pro units.
The unit will be available next month and will retail for around 300 Euros or $425-450 pending fluctuations in exchange rates according to
Tracy and Matt's Blog.
It really looks like HTC is pushing the Touch brand with seven current and upcoming devices: Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, Touch 3G, Touch Viva, Touch Cruise, the original Touch, and the Touch Dual.

HTC has just issued a press release that lifts the sheet off of the Touch HD. All of the specs and dimensions are just what we thought they would be:
iPhone-like thinness at just 12mm, a 480x800 screen (at a huge 3.8"), 512MB ROM, 288MB RAM, a 528MHz Qualcomm CPU, a 5MP camera, and a battery rated at 1350mAh. It also has a 3.5mm headphone jack - a rarity for an HTC device.
The Touch HD is touted as "entertainment focused mobile handset." It launches in Europe in Q4 2008, and it expected to come around to other markets (presumably the US) in the future.
This will indeed be a fantastic internet and multimedia device, and it's likely to be quite popular. Let's just hope a US 3G version is released soon - the variant headed to Europe doesn't have UMTS850. Oddly, the
official HTC page for the HD is down.

HTC's new Touch 3G isn't as advanced as the
Touch Diamond and retains the original form factor and TouchFLO of the first
HTC Touch, which has since been available in CDMA versions on Sprint and Verizon Wireless in the United States. According to the
HTC specs, the Touch 3G is GPS ready and comes with dualband 3G and quad-band GSM/EDGE so the 3G function is without love for United States frequencies. The device has a Qualcomm 528MHz CPU, 256MB ROM, 126MB RAM (drats), a 3-megapixel camera, and a 1100mAh battery.
In terms of size, the Touch 3G is a bit thicker than the original, at 14.5mm compared to 13.9mm.
For those wanting something a bit less expensive (and capable) than the Touch Diamond, the new Touch could be just the right pick. You can find out more about the Touch refresh from the
product page at HTC.
