HTC Touch Diamond review (Part 2) - "Getting Started" Last night I started setting up the Touch Diamond. First things first it's a case of removing the back cover, which slides off upwards, removing the battery and then slipping the SIM card in to place. HTC Touch Diamond SIM Slot At first boot the device sets itself up in much the same way as any other Windows Mobile device. However, after the first reboot you'll notice something different as once the phone starts up, having played a little

HTC's marketing verbiage for the Touch Diamond says "the HTC Touch Diamond™ signals a giant leap forward in combining hi-tech prowess with intuitive usability and exhilarating design." We'll see how true that is as I continue my review of the Touch Diamond, but to give you a hint about its intuitiveness, one thing you may not know is that the Touch Diamond actually plays a full-screen video for you the first time you boot it up. The video is intended to teach you how to use the new TouchFLO 3D interface.

There's no audio in the video, but it looks great on the Touch Diamond's 640x480 pixel screen! The movement is smooth and the resolution is crisp.

We've posted the video for you to download in its original 3GP format.

Did anyone notice, besides msmobiles, that the Touch Pro has TV-Out? The Touch Diamond doesn't have this, so it's unique to the Touch Pro. From the HTC website:

HTC ExtUSB™ (11-pin mini-USB 2.0, audio jack, and TV Out* in one)

Built-in Wi-Fi and TV-out functionality* mean you can hook up to the local wireless hot spot to surf, then deliver the perfect PowerPoint presentation without a laptop in sight. * HTC TV Out cable needed.

That makes the HTC Touch Pro among the Windows Mobile elite that has TV-Out (there aren't many). I hope the resolution scales higher than VGA, unlike the i-mate Ultimate 9502.

MobilityToday has posted a video review of the basics of the HTC Touch Diamond, which is re-posted below in this article. What the folks at MobilityToday found is that after the device goes into standby mode, upon start up, there is some noticeable "pregnant pauses" where it will take a while for the system to recognize key presses.

I am not sure if this time around HTC had licensed all the Qualcomm drivers that enable full utilization of the graphics and video power of the chipset. HTC did not license those drivers for the HTC TyTN II and some other devices, causing user uproar as it limits the potential of the device.

Also of note is a magnetic stylus that will grab the stylus back into the socket once you begin inserting the stylus again. Also, removal of the stylus will trigger the screen to automatically power on, which is nice.

Another official announcement this week - HTC is lifting the sheet off of the HTC Raphael, now known as the Touch Pro.

HTC Corp., a global leader in mobile phone innovation and design, today unveiled its advanced next generation business phone, the HTC Touch Pro™. Bringing a beautiful new angle to mobile business productivity, the HTC Touch Pro utilizes similar styling and functionality of the highly anticipated Touch Diamond™ and introduces a variety of business-focused enhancements that make getting work done on the go quick and easy.

Compared to the HTC Touch Diamond, the Touch Pro is essentially the same device - just 6.77mm thicker to accommodate the keyboard and larger battery (1350mAh vs. 900mAh), and it also has much less storage space, but adds a microSD slot for expansion. Here's a roundup of specs, which shows us that again, HTC won't be releasing this in the US since it doesn't carry the 850 band, at least initially:

  • Size: 102 x 51 x 18.05mm

  • Weight: 165 g

  • Connectivity: WCDMA / HSPA: 900/2100MHz. HSDPA 7.2 Mbps and HSUPA

  • Operating system: Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional

  • Display: 2.8-inch VGA touch screen

  • Camera: 3.2MP, with video calling

  • Internal memory: 512 ...

The highly anticipated HTC Diamond is getting shipped. In fact, over 10,000 units have shipped according to a report from DigiTimes, which has been featured on SlashPhone.

The first 10,000 units were delivered to Hong Kong. Shipments to Europe will continue through June.

Unfortunately, because of the tri-band GSM support of the phone, US customers should not expect the phone stateside. Perhaps a quad-band GSM phone or tri-band phone with US frequencies will be released in the future.

An unboxing of the phone could be found on SlashPhone if you're interested.
