After some skepticism about whether or not the Touch Diamond to be sold in the USA by Best Buy will have the USA 3G bands supported or if it's just another European import sans US 3G support, Engadget has confirmed that Best Buy's version will indeed be US-compatible. The version that will soon be offered at Best Buy will be unlocked and will be compatible for high speed data access on AT&T's network. Because neither AT&T nor T-Mobile has announced plans to offer the Touch Diamond, although the Touch Pro will be coming to AT&T, Best Buy will be offering the unlocked version for $700, which falls in line with HTC's push for better brand recognition in the States.

surfsmurf’s free popular G Sensor (Motion sensor) device locking tool for HTC Diamond and Raphael turned into a free Screen locking tool, basically what it should have been in the first place. Locking and unlocking is simply done by rotating the device around its longest axis (clockwise for locking and counter-clockwise for unlocking) and can be done in any program without disrupting normal device operation.

While previous versions locked the device completely, both screen and buttons, version 0.2.3 comes to turn this utility into the first free G Sensor Screen only locking tool for HTC Diamond and Raphael. This update keeps the Hardware buttons enabled while keeping the screen locked, so you no longer have to worry about unlocking it to answer a phone call. This is particularly useful for those of you having problems with answering or rejecting a call every time you get your devices out of your pockets or pouches, by accidentally tapping the corresponding on-screen buttons. Some other important fixes in this version are referring to automatic unlocking of touch panel and hardware buttons when plugged into external power. Also, while still plugged in, gesture detection has been disabled.

According to the author, ...

To start your week off, we have for new Windows Mobile devices to talk about.

First, BGR is reporting on a new one from i-mate, called the Hummer (shown upper left), which sports a metal-alloy case to provide large degree of durability. We don't have much on the Hummer besides it having WinMo 6.1 Pro, a 2.5" screen (probably just QVGA), plus WiFi, HSDPA, and a 2MP camera. I'm not sure if there is much interest for a rugged device in the consumer space, though perhaps this device will be targeted at those in industry.

Second, though this isn't entirely new, the HTC Touch Pro variant slated for AT&T - the Fuze - passed the FCC as told by Engadget.

Third, SMG tells us that there will be refresh to the highly successful HTC Touch (which can be found on pretty much any carrier now), called the Opal (shown bottom left). The Opal is really just that - a refresh - because the only thing different is the button design (the D-Pad is a bit more square), additional RAM, and use of TouchFLO 3D as found on the Touch Diamond and ...

HTC Touch Pro GSMArena has published a review on the HTC Touch Pro. “At the end of this review, we’re back where we left off. The Touch Pro and the Diamond just go together. In the face of Touch Pro, the Diamond has lost some of its one-of-a-kind design-driven edge and gained elsewhere (beside the waistline). It’s not the most obvious QWERTY add-on only: the TV-out port, better battery and microSD card slot sound just as sweet. It’s not as simple as “we liked the Diamond, so we like the Touch Pr

As we have reported before, Engadget Mobile is publishing a cached Google page that confirms the Touch Pro will be coming to HTC Fuze. Unlike what happened with the TyTN II arriving stateside as the AT&T Tilt where AT&T stripped the device of the HTC home screen, the Fuze will retain TouchFLO 3D for single-handed operation. Verbage from the cached page is included below for your edification:

HTC FUZE™(touch screen)
HTC takes Windows Mobile® smartphone design to the next level with the introduction of the highly desirable and elegant HTC FUZE™. The multi faceted HTC FUZE™ is a 3G tri-band HSDPA Windows Mobile smartphone brought to you by AT&T, which allows you access to the world and to a world of features. Going on a trip? Whether it's a spring break cruise to the islands or a business meeting in Hong Kong, AT&T has you covered with the HTC FUZE™. With the largest international footprint of any wireless provider and the powerful HTC FUZE™, only AT&T customers can make and receive calls in more than 200 countries and on 75 major cruise ships. This is filed under the rumor mill for now, but coolsmartphone.com has an image of a black HTC-made device that resembles the white-Android-based HTC Dream hardware that has been floating around the internet. The Dream has been the code name that is being used for the HTC hardware for Google's forthcoming Android OS. The black Blackstone may be a fake, but is said to have a big 3.7" VGA screen, TouchFLO 3D, and a large 8 GB of onboard storage memory.

Even if the Blackstone is a real device, the presence of TouchFLO 3D, the same technology used in current crops of device like the Touch Diamond and Pro, does not necessarily mean that the device will run on Windows Mobile. It could be a refresh of the Android platform as was reported earlier, TouchFLO 3D is built upon open-source codes that may make it easy for HTC to port the user interface to Android and other potential platforms. However, supporting another platform such as Windows Mobile, on the same hardware as the Dream is not out of the question either as Palm had done with its Treo line in which the Palm and Windows Mobile hardware ...

In this series, we'll try to give you some tips and tricks to get the most functionality and customization to your Touch Diamond. If what they say is true, that a diamond is forever, then might as well make your Diamond something you're proud of.

If you have an HTC-branded Touch Diamond and are on O2 or Vodafone and want the custom themes from your carriers, or conversely if you have a carrier theme and want the default HTC theme for TouchFLO 3D, then you can change it. XDA-Developers has created three theme packages for HTC, O2, and Vodafone. You can follow the instructions on the XDA-Developers thread and change your theme to either add color or change it back to basic black. In order to do this, you do need the Diamond Config utility we previously reported on.

If you like the Touch Pro, but would rather not have the touchscreen, then you may want to consider the forthcoming Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard release of the S740 from HTC. Online retailer Clove Technology has a video demo of the device and it looks snappy, albeit a bit tall. The display is crisp and it looks like the faceted diamond back cover gives for a nice ergonomic feel. The S740 retails for about 300 pounds from Clove Technology in the UK.

While the official announcement wasn't supposed to cross the wires till next week, The Wall Street Journal went early with its story (please don't get me started on this) and published a review of the HTC Touch Diamond for Sprint.

Yes, that's right. The Windows Mobile 6.1 smartphone is officially part of the Sprint family; not that it was a complete surprise. The HTC Touch Diamond, as well as the HTC Touch Pro (no announcement on this model yet), were long rumored for a CDMA carrier months before Wednesday's early coming-out party. So now that the floodgates are open, here is what we know.
