A new
editorial piece on the current state of the PDA market has been posted by 1src columnist Alan Grassia. Grassia's piece begins with a brief history of the modern handheld (nee PDA/organizer) market before highlighting some of the more recent attempts at handheld devices that are essentially PDA-type machines that tout drastically different core functions and branding, such as the Sonys recently refreshed
Mylo line,
Apple's iPod Touch and the
Nokia Internet Tablets. Of course, Hewlett Packard's recent efforts to rekindle the market have seen two new
iPaq units that pack about every conceivable feature into a classic PDA form factor as well as "Travel Companions" that are little more than conventional handhelds with gigs of internal storage and an emphasis on integrated GPS functionality. The editorial is relatively brief but manages to nicely summarize the short but tumultuous history of the PDA market as well as the feelings of the majority of "classic" Palm OS handheld fans who are desperately awaiting new product from Palm.

Sometime around 1990, Data General (who I worked for at the time) came out with a portable terminal called the Walkabout. The idea was that it would let people check their e-mail from the road using the built-in modem and terminal emulator, while being lighter and cheaper than the portable ...

I don’t go into much detail in this 9 minute video, but I show you what’s in the box and some size comparisons of previous Pocket PCs. Check back in a couple weeks for a full review of this entry level Pocket PC. This is the 1st Pocket PC from HP in quite some time. In fact, they kind of formally left the arena, so we thought. Is Dell going to make a comeback too? Who knows. I think it’s quite refreshing to know that those of you that still prefer a Pocket PC have a choice to still buy a bra

The HP iPAQ 100 series represents one of the few Windows Mobile Classic devices to be provided by one of the manufacturers that started it all. Even though current tendencies lead to converged devices, I know many of us old-school users tend to miss things that are currently being sacrificed when manufacturers try to use current hardware limitations to turn a Pocket PC into a mobile phone. Even though...

1. A sleek design: The iPAQ, while much larger than most current Pro devices, proves to be quite light and thin in comparison to past classic devices that were as powerful. It's also quite comfortable to carry around and was well designed...

Fantastic Price ($245 Incl S&H)) for The Great "Hackable" HP iPAQ 310 Dec 26th, 2007 by SolSie I was intrigued with the iPAQ 310, which is a Windows CE based GPS device. First, the screenshot caught my eye with the 3D maps provided by TeleAtlas2007.07 full US and Canada (3D terrain, landmarks, 2D buildings) But looking in to more details, I find the core of the OS is Windows CE embedded running on Centrality (SiRF) Titan dual core 600 MHz with 3D graphics with 128MB fast DDR memory a

iPAQ 110: A big Yawn… Dec 23rd, 2007 by SolSie At the time, where the stand alone PDA/PocketPC is agonizing its slow death, HP has the courage (and I applause this endeavor) to market some new devices namely the iPaq 110, a 3.5″ QVGA stand alone PDA running WM6. The other non-phone iPAQ is the VGA 210, will be available later. Jaime Rivera from PocketNow posted a 2 part video review (Part 2 is HERE!). Jaime did a great job testing thoroughly the interface and the application on the devi

Brighthand HP iPAQ 110 Review Nov 25th, 2007 by SolSie While the market for this class of device steadily declines over years. HP is still betting on smaller niche of users who still opt to carry a separate mobile phone and a PDA and we salute their courageous initiative. The iPAQ 110 is a small PocketPC - Yes we purposely call it affectionately a PocketPC in reminiscence of the iPAQ era - running the latest Windows Mobile 6 "Classic". If you are in the market for this simple form factor

From rumor to fact, we've watched as HP has revived their iPaq line. The first two units will be coming out in just two days, on October 8th. Featuring Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, identical 624mHz processors and WM6 Pro, the cheaper 110 will run $299 while its older brother the 210 will cost $399.
Of course, with contract, they'll cost you a lot less. Wait. They're just PDA's, or, "phone companions" as the models are called in HP's press release. And there are no contract rebates for "phone companions."
Damn. [HP and HP via engadget]
