HP used to be a company that made stodgy computers that only your 60 year old father would like – if he knew how to use it. In the last year they have really gotten their act together on the design front and are coming out with some pretty slick hardware these days. Leading the pack is their innovative all in one Touchsmart PCs, which takes aim directly at Apple’s popular iMac line, adding slick touch-screen functionality in the process. I’ll start by saying, that I’m not a fan of touch scre

Just a year or two ago, there was a large scale battery recall for laptops and now HP, Toshiba, and Dell are recalling another round of Sony-manufactured batteries for their notebooks. The recall effects about 100,000 batteries that may risk overheating and catching fire. Users who are effected are advised to stop using said batteries immediately. According to InfoWorld:

Of the 100,000 batteries affected, around 35,000 were used in laptops shipped in the U.S. By far the greatest number, about 32,000, were shipped with HP laptops.

The maker said it is recalling batteries that have a barcode label beginning with A0, L0, L1, or GC that were shipped with HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000, and zd8000 models; with Compaq Presario v2000 and v2400 machines; and with HP Compaq nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230,nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120, and nx9600 computers.

Toshiba's U.S. recall covers around 3,000 Satellite A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X, and M50/M55 laptops and Tecra A3, A5 and S2 computers.

Dell is recalling battery model OU091 in Latitude 110L and Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, and 5160 computers.

The batteries were manufactured between October 2004 and June 2005. There have been 40 incidents of overheating to ...

I've always been a fan of the REDFLY and the scrapped Palm Folio--an easy to use laptop replacement that connects to your handheld device for its power and prowess. This way, it won't be as costly to replace if it was lost, stolen, or damaged. However, with the netbook market, things changed. HP has finally announced the HP Mini 1000--joining in with the Mini Note 2133. The new 1000 series has a 10.2-inch 1024 X 600 display featuring a 92% keyboard and weighs less than 2 pounds according to DigiTimes. The basic model starts at $379, which should be available early next year. The $400 is shipping now with a $700 model shipping by the end of this year. Prices are based on configurations of a 9-inch or 10-inch screen, XP or Linux, and various drive configurations.

Remember the HP Silver? It looks like HP will be officially calling it the Voice Messenger running on Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard with a large SureType keyboard.

In terms of specs, we've got a 2.4" QVGA non-touch screen, quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900), triband UMTS (900/1900/2100), 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, plus GPS, WiFi, a 3.1MP rear camera, and microSD expansion. The battery is 1260mAh. The Voice Messenger, like its Data Messenger brother, has an optical pointing device in the center of the D-Pad. All in all, a generally lackluster device that is likely to show up in Vodafone land in the coming weeks.

Would you look at that? HP has a spankin' new WinMo Pro device to bring to the table that slides open to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard. The Data Messenger, though a nice deviation in terms of design with a minimalist blue facade, is a bit lackluster in the specs department. It's got a 2.8" QVGA screen, quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900), triband UMTS (900/1900/2100), 128MB RAM, 256MB ROM, plus GPS, WiFi, a 3.1MP rear camera, and SD (not microSD) memory expansion. Powering it all is a relatively meager 1140mAh. Listed in the spec sheet is "5-way optical navigation", which tells us that the center of the D-Pad is an optical sensor. Perhaps the Data Messenger will utilize an on-screen mouse pointer like the Omnia. It's pretty thick at 17.4mm, but thinner than the TyTN II and the Touch Pro from HTC. For more, check out the official HP site. Thanks to wmpoweruser for the tip.

HP is going to be expanding its product line to include notebooks with a TouchSmart interface, a larger screen netbook, and a "touch" phone, according to Gizmodo. As it stands, HP already has touchscreen phones--there are a number of iPAQs available, including the most recent iPAQ 900 series. There is some speculation that HP may explore Android, Google's open-source mobile operating system or continue to use Windows Mobile and add its own TouchSmart user interface, much in the same way that HTC has done with TouchFLO 3D.

HP’s m-series computers are designed for mainstream home users with rigorous multimedia demands, such as watching HD movies, recording TV, and maybe even some light gaming. HP calls the m9200t an “entertainment powerhouse,” and though we probably wouldn’t go that far, it’s safe to say it’s a well-built machine with more than enough power to satisfy the majority of home users. Its biggest flaw is that it includes typical big-box bloatware and toolbars, and is a bit generic in terms of its de

The HP Oak, which has been leaked since early this year, is now ready for a release to European markets. The phone runs Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and features a sliding QWERTY keyboard in landscape format, not unlike the Touch Pro or Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. However, HP's implementation will also feature a numberical dialpad on the front as well as an embedded directional pad on top of the number pad. The concept of the embedded directional pad is similar to that found on the HP iPAQ 600 series. According to IntoMobile, the phone is ready for a year-end launch.

Way back to the HP iPAQ 6500 series Pocket PC Phone, there has been a history of slow, super slow, launches. Mobilitysite in part evolved from iPaqHQ and one of the reasons we moved forward, away from iPAQ was their apparent lack of commitment to Pocket PC and Smartphones. They even said they were getting out of the game, but never did. Their launches have been way off target though. The iPAQ 6900 series was about 6 months late to the game when it hit AT&T. It would have been a hit had it m

Looky here: HP is still chugging along with the iPAQs. This time it's a Windows Mobile 6.1 Standard device, dubbed the "HP Silver" - though we're sure there's some iPAQ branding in there as well - with a SureType keyboard (like the T-Mo Shadow). Not much is known about the device except that it's running on GSM with HSDPA, and packs GPS and WiFi. It could be a good rival to the HTC S740 non-touchscreen WinMo phone. See some more photos over at Eng Mobile.

However, no review is complete without the reviewer’s personal take on it and that is what Part IV is all about. So what did I think of it?
