It's not often that we see an interesting non-mobile phone-related device at CommunicAsia, but at the Garmin booth, where the Nuvifone was showcased, we spied a unique UMPC.

The Noahpad was used as a device to showcase Garmin's navigation software, but our eyes kept straying ...

In an effort to keep up with all things GPS, I go through over 100 RSS feeds and websites each day. It's all complicated by GPS being an acronym for other things including schools and sports teams, and often these stories are a source of amusement. The most recent chuckle came from the headline Dragons overpower GPS, hence the title of this week's edition of Waypoints. Garmin Garmin has released BETA firmware for the Colorado 300 and 400t, which adds a "reposition waypoint here" feature, among

Garmin XT review

Devicewire have kindly sent us a review copy of Garmin Mobile XT. Since the biggest player in sat nav no longer bother with our industry, it’s left to the others to put together decent sat nav solutions for phones and PDAs. Garmin is one of the bigger names, and the latest release has plenty of nice features. Installation is nice and easy providing you use the original microSD card, or the supplied card-size adaptors. I have been using the Garmin software with the memory card installed in my N

I just found the Garmin Mobile 20 GPS system for smartphones for $59.99 (not including tax and shipping) at TigerGPS. While I'd never heard of them before, PriceGrabber does have them listed as a four-star merchant.

This is a crazy low price! The second lowest price on PriceGrabber was over $160. TigerGPS itself sells the GPS receiver/mount separately for about $130.

The package includes the following:

  • The GPS 20SM Smart Mount (a powered mount with a built-in Bluetooth GPS receiver)

  • A memory card with the Garmin Mobile XT navigation software and City Navigator NT maps

  • A dashboard disk (presumably if you don't want to stick the mount to your windshield)

  • Adapter cables for various phones

  • I've been using Garmin Mobile 10 with my Motorola Q and Q9m, and it works well (although the software can be a bit hard to navigate at times), but I paid almost $120 for that.

If you've been looking for a GPS navigation system for your Windows Mobile device, you can get a Garmin for a price that probably can't be beat.

In case anyone has not had their fill of depressing Palm OS-related news this week, we have just received word that Garmin has officially discontinued their final two Palm OS-based handhelds with integrated GPS functionality. In actuality, Garmin's PDA line has been dying a long, protracted death for several years as the company shifted its focus to standalone GPS navigators and add-on mapping software partnered with a Bluetooth GPS receiver such as the Mobile 10, 20 and XT packages.

Garmin’s iQue 3600a, the specialized aviation version of the original iQue 3600, has finally been put out to pasture, juding by the product’s "discontinued" status on its web page.

Here's another feather in Garmin's GPS cap. The iQue 3000 rounds out the company's iQue Palm OS PDA product line and is being marketed as an entry level PDA offering fully integrated GPS technology. Includes Garmin's where to or view maps interface and once you put in a destination, the 3000 will calculate the shortest and quickest route for you to take. In the event that you can't take directions, it will also recalculate a route if you miss a turn. Other features include complete integration between organization and GPS navigation functions, so it connects the Palm Address Book and Date Book to the GPS electronic map, letting you navigate directly to a specific address from your contact database or date book. Not a bad little trick. Retails at $400 and comes with a mini-USB synchronization cable, AC wall charger, suction cup mount auto cradle, microSD Card, 12-volt car charger, companion CD or DVD (US only) with owner s manual, City Navigator North America NT CD, and quick-reference guide.
