With Microsoft pushing for Vista and consumers clamoring for the stability and familiarity of Windows XP, PC-maker Dell is extending the deadline to order an XP machine until June 26th. If you are in the market for a new Dell and definitely want XP pre-loaded, this is your last chance.
According to
The Boy Genius Report, the extension applies only to select Dell computers: various versions of the Inspiron 530 and the XPS 630 systems.
For many systems from a variety of PC-manufacturers, users can opt to have XP pre-loaded with a free upgrade to Vista should the user be comfortable for the self-installed upgrade in the future.
For many of our smartphone and PDA readers, the question really boils down to ActiveSync (on XP) versus Mobile Device Center (on Vista).

Gizmodo got an exclusive first look at Dell's entry into the sub-notebook category for ultraportables. The miniaturized laptop will presumably support some flavor of Windows or Linux and is dubbed the Dell Mini Inspiron for now.
Dell's entry marks a maturing, yet crowded space that is being occupied by the popular
Eee PC manufactured by Asus and the recent sturdy entry of the
HP Mini-Note 2133.
The Mini Inspiron brings a sporty red look compared to the consumer white look of the Eee PCor the professional metal finish of the HP 2133.

Dell Says it Will Join the Sub-notebook Fray (Bring Back Windows 98SE!) Sat, 12 Apr 2008 07:04:31 Looks like Dell is playing the me-too catch-up game (from Information Week)… Dell Gears Up To Enter Mini-Notebook Market The first question is what price will the Dell entry be set at and what features will be available. Asus gambled and took the early mind-share. HP seems to have raised the bar (feature-wise) — although some claim […] Evernote: Notes on your Desk and Phone without Syncing Thu,

Its been nearly 2 years since the Dell Axim X51 and the HP iPAQ 4700, but those two Pocket PCs are still regarded by many as the best Pocket PC out there. Well, there aren’t really that many standalone Pocket PCs being made anymore. Think about it though, has there been any advances in processors in the last two years? Not really. You can go buy the hottest Pocket PC Phone on the market and still get the same specs as the Dell Axim X51 from 2 years ago. Look at the AT&T Tilt… It has a 400m

Acer's decision to purchase E-Ten is causing Dell a bit of distress, so much so that they're planning to get back into the handheld business. Around 1 year ago Dell hired Ron Garriques, former Motorola VP of the Cellphone Division, to help the company get back into the mobile space. Reportedly the handhelds will be built by Foxconn and will be running Windows Mobile and have GPS. As a huge Axim fan, those VGA screens were absolutely stunning at the time, I'm glad to see that Dell is coming

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a new laptop for my work. I wanted to get something that was both thin and light and capable of any computing task...say a machine under 4lbs which could handle non linear video editing. Yes, I am that guy who has high demands for computers. This past summer Dell released a lightweight portable with a high end geek factor to some pretty rave critical reviews. This holiday season they offered 799.00 off of the high end configuration of that machine - the XP

Remember when Dell dropped the Axim PDA and the world yawned like a slutty hippopotamus? Well, it looks like it was because even Dell knew that PDAs were out and smartphones (PDAs with calling capabilities) are in. They've contracted Quanta Computer—which incidentally supplies Dell's laptops as well—to build them a smartphone for launch in Q4 2007.
There aren't many details to be found, but "sources" claim that it's codenamed "Fly" and will have Windows Mobile 6, HSDPA, and possibly a QWERTY. Since we're loath to use a smartphone that doesn't have a keyboard, we hope that last part's true.
In a market dominated by HTC, we'll just have to see what Dell needs to do to bring something new to the table. – Jason Chen

Here's a great deal for those of you who have waited to order an X50v (or who like me got screwed on their original order and cancelled): they are currently 15% off and that discount is stackable with a one-day only $50 off $450 coupon for a final price of $374.15 with free shipping and no tax in many states (for some reason it also gave me free next day shipping).
All you have to do is click on the link below, add to your cart, and apply coupon code WMP04MKN92KZ09 when you checkout. The coupon is limited to 1500 uses and expires at 11.59pm CST 11/25/2004.
624 MHz Axim X50v Handheld with 1-Year Advanced Exchange Service and 1-Year Tech Support
Also, I don't know how accurate it currently is but the Dell site is claiming the X50v usually ships in 1 or 2 days.
I just ordered an X50v at this price, lets see if I actually receive it this time.

My frustration with Dell grows.
While researching why my Axim X50v has been delayed yet again I discovered that the bluetooth keyboard I ordered at the same time has had it's description updated.
It used to read "Executive Keyboard for Dell Axim Handhelds (Requires Bluetooth enabled PDA)", now it reads "Executive Keyboard for Dell Axim Handhelds (Not compatible with Axim X50/X50v; requires Bluetooth enabled PDA)".
Here is a hint for Dell: Why not contact customers who ordered both the X50 and the keyboard and tell them they won't work together instead of waiting until the product ships and you get all the returns.

Is it just me or is everyone experiencing this delay?

One of the few areas where the Dell Axim X50v trails the competition is in RAM, the X50v only has 64MB RAM where some other VGA Pocket PCs have 128MB.
If this is a concern for you then PocketPCTechs have a solution: a 128MB RAM upgrade.
"Upgrade your Dell Axim X50v series internal RAM from 64MB to 128MB with our upgrade service. During the upgrade process we remove the existing 64MB and install 128MB. This memory upgrade does NOT require our proprietary driver and is fully recognized by the OS (125.74MB Available). This unit uses low voltage hi-speed BGA memory, so stacking is not available and 128MB will be the maximum capacity."

Looks like Dell may be having problems getting the X50v out on time. I ordered in the first 30 minutes of the X50v being offered for sale, got a ship date of 11/19, which later changed to 11/17, but now I have received an email telling me of a delay of a week:
"We have reviewed your order. Although we had anticipated being able to ship your order sooner, we are experiencing an unexpected delay with your order and will not be able to ship this order and any associated orders until on or before 11-24-2004.
No action is required to proceed with the new date, however, if you do not wish to wait, you may cancel your order.
If you wish to cancel your order or if you have any questions, please go to www.support.dell.com or contact us at 1-800-624-9897, extension (66966)."
