Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business Senior Vice President, Andy Lees, has
written a letter to all Windows Mobile Partners, thanking them for helping to make Windows Mobile such a successful product.
Today, more and more competitors are jumping into the smartphone market or announcing upgrades, with features we delivered to customers years ago. Overall, we all benefit from the increased attention on everything that a smartphone can do and the difference it can make in peoples lives. But ultimately, it is your commitment to Windows Mobile thats helped shape our success. Our shared desire to help people do more with their phone the way they choose, and our ongoing focus to deliver experiences that delight our mutual customers forms the foundation of our continued success together.
I look forward to continuing this adventure with you.
Some interesting statistics included in the letter:
- 20 million Windows Mobile licenses sold this year
- 150 different phone choices
- 160 mobile operator partners around the world
- 18,000 applications
- last quarter our year-over-year unit growth alone was greater than sales of Apples iPhone
Many of the bloggers and iPhone fans out there will have you think that Windows ...

StyleTap today officially confirmed that they plan to bring a version of its
StyleTap CrossPlatform environment to the iPhone and the iPod touch platform. The move will essentially bring thousands of Palm OS apps over to the new iPhone platform.
Back in February StyleTap released a video demo of the StyleTap running Palm OS apps on a iPod Touch. The company says they have been overwhelmed by the level of interest and the video has been viewed over 800,000 times.

It looks like the iPhone isn't going to be the only phone in town with some Mobile Safari love. The Webkit-browser is hopping platforms to Symbian S60 courtesy of the new Samsung L870 slider phone that is reminiscent of the Nokia N95.
The Samsung L870 rounds out the specs with a 2.4" QVGA display, S60 operating system based on Symbian, 3 megapixel camera, FM radio, Bluetooth, microSD expansion, and tri-band GSM and single band HSDPA. This means that there won't be a North American version, unless a separate version is built with North American frequencies. According to
Engadget Mobile, the phone will be headed to Europe around August.

This is interesting. Here is a German to English translation of an article posted on ZDnet Germany that implies that we see a new iPhone model be announced at WWDC:
As part of an Intel event for the 40th birthday of the semiconductor company at Munichs BMW World, Germany managing director Hannes Schwaderer confirmed today what has long been a rumor on the Internet: namely, that there is an iPhone with Intels new Atom chip. The device is slightly larger than the current version, Schwaderer said. That is not, however, because of the Intel chip, but because of the larger display used in the new iPhone.
The
Intel Atom chip is supposed to provide low power consumption and decent clock speeds for future mobile internet devices (phones, UMPCs, etc).
This bit of news correlates nicely to a rumor posted on
MacRumors a few days ago that Apple would be unveiling a larger, mini-tablet multi touch device that would sport a 720x480 screen. It's a natural course of action that Apple would extend the iPhone brand to other form factors and other price points, as they did with the iPod: Apple tested the ...

So there are two types of touchscreens that are used in mobile devices. Resistive (found on every Windows Mobile device) and capacitive (found on the iPhone, and a few other devices).
Resistive screens work by, well, resistance. If you press on the screen, you're causing two electrically-charged layers to meet at a certain point. The device can then track the coordinates of the touch by where this contact occurred. Resistive touchscreens are cheaper to produce than capacitive, though offer lower visual clarity and are often times less sensitive.
A capacitive touchscreen exhibits a continuous flow of electrons across the surface. When an object that has capacitance, like a person's finger, touches the screen, the capacitive field is distorted. The phone tracks the distortion and assigns coordinates to the touch. This is why you can't use a pen tip (or any other non-finger object) with the iPhone - a pen tip doesn't have capacitance.
Here's the big question: Why don't Windows Mobile device have iPhone-like capacitive touchscreens?

Originally, I had thought that hardware--good hardware--would inspire me to use my camera on my Windows Mobile device. In particular, with the release of the
Nokia N95, I thought that perhaps if Windows Mobile came with a nice camera, I may be more inclined to use it. As it stands, I haven't even opened the camera application on my AT&T Tilt in over 4 months.
However, an interesting article over at
MobilitySite showing that the iPhone was the most used camera-phone for Flickr uploads had me thinking. Perhaps camera use isn't really related to how good the camera is as long as the camera takes decent shots, but how easy it is to share pictures with friends and family.
Would you be more inclined to snap pictures if sharing them on your Windows Mobile device was easier like the iPhone where you can just email the photos to a Flickr address to post? Or would you want a higher resolution, auto-focus camera with xenon flash? Both would be ideal, but having to choose, I may have to say the ability to share is the killer camera-phone application.

Do you have iPhone envy? I do. In fact, just this past Sunday I walked into the AT&T store and I browsed TMCnet on the iPhone and was blown away at how easy it was to surf on this phone compared to a Windows Mobile 6 device. I then asked if there was a firm ETA on the 3G iPhone (there isn't) and as I walked into the nearby Starbucks with my family I debated with my wife the pros and cons of switching to the Apple device from my HTC 6800 on Verizon. I was close to deciding to switch to App
