With all the Apple rumors over the past week or so, Brenda and I were discussing whether we’d rather see a grown-up iPod Touch-style UMPC from the company, or a full-sized MacBook Tablet.  As a Tablet PC user in the past, I’m a sucker for the full-sized option running OS X; Brenda is more keen on something super-portable that will kick Microsoft’s UMPC format into the dust.  In the end, we decided to argue it out online and give SlashGear readers the chance to throw in their opinions too; we’re

With HTC and Nokia phones getting good reviews on build qualities, software instabilities aside, Apple has a lot of catching up to do with the second generation of its phone release dubbed iPhone 3G. The Cupertino, California company received high praises for the aluminum-backed first generation of iPhone but the 3G version switches from metal to plastic. With that comes some growing pains. Better reception was the outcome, but with it comes cracking plastics.

Users on Apple's forum noted that the cracks occur mostly on the white iPhone 3G model (available in 16 GB capacity). It is unclear whether or not the black model (available in 8 and 16 GB capacities) has the same defect because the small, hairline fractures would be harder to see on the black. Users say that the crack, along with collecting dust, dirt, and other debris makes it more visible on the white plastic.

The photo from Engadget Mobile, reposted below, shows cracks either around the headphone jack, the silent switch and around the volume controls, and on the bottom near the synchronization port. However, users on Apple's forums and other forums have noted cracks on the back surface ...

Brandon had shown us how to play Nintendo games for those old school retro flashback moments on a Windows Mobile device, but how about a new way to play? Gizmodo reported that the jailbroken iPhone can play NES (Nintendo) games as well, but with a different way to control the game.

Rather than pressing the buttons to move left, right, up or down, games may also be controlled with the accelerometer. Tilting the device left will move Mario forward in Super Mario Brothers. Of course, users can also use the virtual controller on the iPhone's screen with multi-touch. Since upcoming HTC devices, including the Touch Diamond and the forthcoming Touch Pro will have an accelerometer, will a developer port this feature over? Users can opt for tilt and control or use the hardware buttons on Windows Mobile.

One thing that the iPhone and Nintendo Wii have done is to redefine the gaming experience with a new way to interact with and control devices. With the high technologies that will be going into upcoming Windows Mobile devices, perhaps we should re-think of how games should be developed and make Windows Mobile a viable ...

Brandon had commented on how great the potential is for the App Store on the iPhone, despite its initial woes as Apple's initial foray into supporting native applications on the iPhone rather than just web applications rendered through the Safari browser. The one thing that I noticed about the App Store is that the bulk of applications are priced between $2.99 and $9.99 with many notable freeware and some useable apps at $0.99. Many Windows Mobile application are priced between $10 and $30. Even still, some titled offered on multiple platforms by the same software house is priced differently, with Windows Mobile and Palm titles costing more than the iPhone/iPod Touch counterparts. This holds true for popular titles such as Ilium eWallet, which retails for $30 on Windows Mobile versus $9.99 through Apple's App Store. SplashID is $9.99, but adding the desktop synchronization component brings the cost of ownership on par to the Windows Mobile counterpart.

Also, games seem to be cheaper on the iPhone, with most "advanced" titles with good graphics and polish costing $5-$10, including titles such as Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart, Texas Hold Em, Scrabble, Tetris, and Super Monkey Ball. Contrast that with ...

Apple had recently filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to bring Windows Media content and Flash to the iPhone. Top iPhone News shows a webpage with Flash and Windows Media support. Apple may never bring the technology to the iPhone, but the methodology exists should the firm bring this support.

Apple may treat Windows Media streaming content and Flash in the same way it treats QuickTime content on a webpage by showing a screenshot of the movie or a direct link to the streaming audio content. With QuickTime, when users click on the screenshot of the video, the video will be played in a standalone QuickTime player. This way, iPhone Safari won't be bogged down with the resources required to stream directly on the webpage. The same method could apply to Flash and Windows Media files on a webpage. This is speculation as details are scant on Apple's filing.

Apple and Adobe have been at odds on the support of Flash on the iPhone. Adobe wants to bring the standard to the platform, but Apple had previously contended that Flash is a resource hog on mobile devices and Mobile Flash ...

It seems that some users, like this one at mocoNews, are returning their iPhone 3Gs. Why? Poor battery life seems to be the biggest reason. The other reason is dropped calls from poor cellular reception.

Interestingly, PC World reported that the iPhone had fair battery life for a smart phone, beating all of the AT&T Windows Mobile phones. Of course, you can easily replace the battery in Windows Mobile devices.

Does the iPhone's function and cool factor justify dealing with the problems? Let us know what you think.

While most iPhone users are awaiting Firmware 2.0.1 to get their stability issues resolved, scant details are floating around on the internet about 2.1 with improvements to GPS and possibly the copy and paste function, a feature that most users have been eager to have since the inception of the first iPhone. According to iPhone Atlas, the new firmware made some API changes that will make the GPS more accurate, with speed and direction readings. Also, Engadget Mobile is reporting that there are some command strings for cut, copy, and paste. It looks like the upgrade, along with the resolution of some serious stability issues, may be a welcomed tune for many iPhone users who have upgraded to iPhone 2.0 or have bought an iPhone 3G.

The majority of comments I’ve seen related to iPhone gaming is the lack of physical gamepad controls. True the iPhone does not have physical gamepad controls, but the accel/touch based controls should not be underestimated, they have great potential for certain game genres. OS X Reality has posted up a their take on the whole iPhone Gaming thing: No one controller type fits all game genres, take PC vs consoles for example. Console gamers can argue all they want, but a gamepad will never give you the level of precision a mouse will for RTS or FPS gaming. Case in point, in Shadowrun they had to nerf the PC gamers to keep the playing field even between Xbox and PC players, this is exactly why developers do not like mixing console with PC gamers, even though technically there is no reason they can’t, its really just a matter of fairness. On the flip side, a keyboard will never give a gamer the level of control needed for racing/flight/fighting games. Imagine for a moment if you were racing around a track with a variety of turns that range from light bends to sharp turns, with a gamepad joystick you could adjust your turns easily ...

According to iPhone Atlas, some users were getting strange and inaccurate GPS readings when on the 3G network with their iPhones (being in Oregon and being shown in Texas on the Maps application). However, the site also states that some users have noticed that turning off the 3G data connection and reverting back to EDGE helps to resolve the problem by showing the accurate GPS positioning.

It seems that 3G is the root of other problems for the new iPhone 3G as well. Some users have also noticed a slight echo when paired to certain car speaker systems while in 3G mode. Again, reverting to EDGE may help the situation.

I wonder if any Windows Mobile users are effected with the same issue, either in Google Maps or Live Search. If so, does this trick help? I've always had good location readings from my trusty Tilt.

With all the buzz, hype, and accolades surrounding the new App Store that made its debut both on the new firmware upgrade dubbed iPhone 2.0 and on the new iPhone 3G hardware recently released, I wanted to see if Windows Mobile can compete with the rumored polish that Apple promises. As the first iPhone was lovingly called the JesusPhone, does the second coming of the JesusPhone really live up to the hype that is the App Store?

In my experience, the App Store, while a great interface and a great user experience to start off with, leaves a lot to be desired. Website iPhone Atlas is reporting that developers are complaining that there is no way to get trial versions on the App Store at this point; releases and updates to existing applications are slow because Apple must first approve the apps first; and finally, developers cannot market apps with sales and discounts at this point to really promote the app to new users. Those are the laments on the developers' end. On my end--oh faithful consumer of Apple am I--the App Store is supposed to be well integrated, easy to use, and contain apps that are ...

Justin Montgomery, of InformationWeek has written an interesting article regarding the never-ending Windows Mobile vs. iPhone vs. Android speculation story.

Of Windows Mobile, he says, "The fact that it's meant to be used across several devices and manufacturers still makes more sense than limiting itself to one device like Apple's iPhone OS. With an Android-like distribution method, they're still in the best position to dominate the space.

"From a future-development standpoint, Windows Mobile might provide the best opportunity, only because it's so well-rooted within the mobile community. Developers have use of one of the most robust, and easily extensible mobile platforms available, as well as one of the largest supported development communities around. While this might change with the maturing of Apple's App Store, and Google's "open-sourced" Android, it's still the best platform to get your work noticed for the time being. "

In using the iPhone 2.0 software with Exchange, I've come across a missing feature with the push email: only the Inbox gets push email. Any sub folders that you have require a manual send/receive to check for new mail. This is annoying, especially when a send/receive can take up to 20 seconds on a slow network. On Windows Mobile, all email folders are always up to date.

Secondarily, you can't search the server. With Windows Mobile 6 and Exchange Server 2007, you can search through thousands of old email messages and not have to store them locally. With the iPhone, this important and useful feature doesn't exist.

Update: It looks like Exchange on the iPhone is much more lacking than just these two issues. Apple should have called it "Exchange Lite". Take a look at the dissection of missing features on Jason Langridge's blog. Others he mentions: no flagging of email, no control over maximum attachment size, no support for ActiveSync scheduling, etc. He also points out shortcomings with the Calendar/Contacts aspect of the Exchange integration, such as: no invite function for meetings, no attendee status, etc. Thanks to surur for ...

After a week of delay, Apple finally releases Ilium's eWallet electronic wallet application in the App Store. As far as I know this is the first Windows Mobile application available on the iPhone.

eWallet for the iPhone currently lacks any synchronization capability, however according to Ilium this feature will be coming soon. Apple does not currently provide any synchronization API for developers to use. This has been a sore point with the development community. Although developers grumble about the complexity of the ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center synchronization API, at least it is available.

Another problem with the iPhone version is the web site user id and password fill function which does not work. I suspect this is due to the fact that Apple currently only allows one application to run at a time (even though the iPhone OS can handle multitasking). eWallet suspends before the web site is rendered making it impossible for it to fill in the user id and password fields. Hopefully some work around can be found.

The functionality of eWallet for the iPhone is based on eWallet 6.1. Our review of eWallet 6.0 for Windows Mobile was posted back in January. ...

Wired is reporting that AT&T is now offering free WiFi hotspot browsing, including those at local Starbucks locations, for iPhone users. You can learn more about the offer from the AT&T Mobility page.

Earlier this year, AT&T prematurely launched this deal and then took it down. There were loopholes with the initial launch in which early users were able to user their WiFi enabled laptops and trick the system into thinking that they were on iPhone Safari with desktop Safari. Other users were able to log in by just entering a telephone number of a friend who had an iPhone account with AT&T. At this time, it is unclear whether those loopholes have been plugged.

As a response to Adam's post - Race My Treo! - Usability Speed Tests for the Treo 800w, I've created this video.

We're going to run through the following tests to determine how long it takes to do certain tasks on the iPhone. Then we will compare it with the results that Adam got on the Treo 800w.

1. Launching programs: email, contacts, calendar.

2. Launching Google Maps from the home screen.

3. Launching a favorite.

4. Launching media player and playing a playlist.

5. Adding a new contact.

6. Emailing the new contact.

iPhone Results (in bold) vs Treo 800w:
Test 1: open email, contacts, & calendar = 12 seconds, 2 seconds
Test 2: open Google Maps = 1.5 seconds, 2 seconds
Test 3: open a saved website favorite = 1.5 seconds, 5 seconds
Test 4: find and play music from a specific artist = 8 seconds, 8 seconds
Test 5: make a new contact with lots of info = 80 seconds, not tested
Test 6: send the contact an email = 26 seconds, not tested

All this talk of the iPhone 3G reminds me how Windows Mobile is the most robust platforms in terms of form factor choice. But how many form factors are there? I set out to find the answer.

If we just focus on keyboard type, there are a total of 16 form factors to Windows Mobile. That's a huge amount of choices. But of course, having 16 form factors doesn't detract from the substantial list of problems we have with WinMo in its current iteration, but it is indeed an important consideration when choosing a smartphone platform.

Click the below chart for a high-res image.

Looking beyond iPhone, which of course only has one form factor, BlackBerry has two currently with two on the way (candybar QWERTY, candybar SureType, flip SureType, and no keyboard), Palm has two (candybar QWERTY and no keyboard), and Symbian does a bit better with a handful (candybar T9, flip T9, clamshell QWERTY, no keyboard, Down-Sliding T9, etc).

That said, what's your favorite keyboard form factor?

Update: Added number 17 (thanks Steve) and number 18 (thanks srigopal). Any others?
