The iPhone 3G debuted early yesterday morning, and many people lined up in the pre-dawn hours at Apple and AT&T stores to be one of the first to get this smartphone. Brighthand contributor Nick Spohnholtz was one of them, and he shares his experiences buying, unboxing, and activating the device.

As reported by eWeek, Windows for Devices, and others, Microsoft shipped 4.5 million Windows Mobile devices during the first quarter of 2008, up 1.8 million units year over year.

Andy Lees, during his Windows Mobile Keynote from the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, cited IDG figures showing that Apple sold only 1.7 million iPhones during the same quarter.

So in other words, Microsoft's Windows Mobile sales INCREASED by more than the number of total iPhone sales.

Granted, even though Windows Mobile is in 2nd place for worldwide smartphone sales, it's still dwarfed by Nokia's Symbian, but that's another story.

While reading Chuong's story about iPhone GPS, I checked out the New Yorks Times Technology pages. I read a story about cell phone termination fees that also mentioned a cool iPhone medical application, the A.D.A.M. Symptom Navigator. I tried going to the site, only to be told that it was only for the iPhone -- and it thoughtfully provided me a link to Apple so that I could buy one.

As A.D.A.M. described the application as Web-based, I figured it should work on Windows Mobile and wanted to see. After all, browser-based discrimination goes against the openness of the Web (and isn't much better than discriminating against people). The good news is that, after a minor bit of Web hacking, I got the main URL to get to the Symptom Navigator.

It works best on a Pocket PC, I suspect, because it uses an image map, but Smartphones can handle it, too. Check it out and let us know what you think. If you like it, fight browser discrimination and make it a favorite.

Back in March, Microsoft mentioned to Fortune that they were evaluating the Apple iPhone SDK. Many people interpreted this as though Microsoft would be developing a version of Office for the iPhone.

Now that the iPhone's App store is opened, it's pretty clear that most of the applications you might have been hoping for are not there. However, one nice movie searching application called Box Office is there and that happens to have been developed by Cyrus Najmabadi of Microsoft (in his spare time).

Box Office is very similar to the Movies section of Microsoft's Live Search Mobile in that you can search for nearby movie theaters and show times based on a GPS location, however it also shows movie ratings from Rotten Tomatoes.

Is this what Microsoft was referring to when talking to Fortune months ago?

Well that did’nt take long. The New Zeland boys are at it agian and due to the time zone thingy they have their 3G iPhone in hand...er in pieces. That’s 5:01 AM, July 10, Pacific time for those of us who aren’t islanders. We’re working hard on getting it apart. Here’s a link to last-year’s iPhone disassembly. Today I installed the 2.0 firmware on my iPhone.

The App store is terrific. Of the 500 applications on there now, about 125 of them are free. And the free applications aren't low quality - you can get Bloomberg, Facebook, AIM, eBay, and others, without charge. Each App "page" contains info about the program, a screenshot, and a link to reviews. Downloading and installing an app over WiFi takes from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. If you want to purchase an App, and so far I've bought two (Monkey Ball and Texas Hold 'em) for just $9.99 and $4.99 respectively, you enter your iTunes account password, and you are billed instantly. Quite convenient, and a great experience. The only fault I see with the App store is that there are no free trials offered (as far as I could tell).

I was more than happy to pay such cheap prices for these applications. For something similar that works on Windows Mobile, I know that I'd pay 2-3 times more, because software companies like PocketGear and Handago charge their developers outrageous 40-70% royalty fees on each copy of software sold, whereas ...

The iPhone brought back the touchscreen and enabled new designs and visions for virtual keyboards. Prior to that, PDAs and smartphones moved towards an era of containing a physical keyboard as the popularity of Palm and BlackBerry devices grew. However, with the iPhone and its many clones, even Windows Mobile devices now can be fully functional for extended text entry without keyboards like the HTC Touch and Touch Diamond.

However, are you ready for a keyboard-less laptop? V12 Design seems to think so with a dual-screen laptop concept which they hope to take to market.

The laptop will look similar to current laptops with a clamshell design. Instead of a trackpad and keyboard on the bottom, a second screen will be utilized where users can call up a virtual keyboard if needed. According to Gizmodo, a new, revised prototype has been released and V12 Design hopes to have some units in production by 2010. The picture shown below is a first generation prototype.

David Pogue, in his usual comedic self, points out some of the limitations of the iPhone 3G. I know we have posted the issues out on pocketnow.com, but not with humor...

Not to take away anything from the iPhone 3G, but Apple needs to start addressing issues like cut and paste and the lack of a data synchronization mechanism for 3rd party applications (they have to write their own). These are areas where Windows Mobile is still king.

There was the old fashioned way of exchanging numbers on a napkin; there was the Palm Pilot method of beaming your personal information; Bluetooth made infra-red obsolete and business people can exchange information wirelessly. Now, Gizmodo is reporting that with the iPhone's accelerometer, two nearby iPhones can shake and exchange business contacts.

The software that enables the "iPhone handshake" is designed by Tapulous, where presumably the information is exchanged over the cloud. The iPhones within proximity would share information over the wireless internet and would not even need to establish a connection with each other.

This is a cool concept. With the HTC Touch Diamond also bearing an accelerometer in its hardware specs, perhaps a Windows Mobile version can be created. Gone are the days of punching a number in the phone, calling the person right away so that both persons would have their respective friend's number stored on caller ID. I do that, but I get lazy about saving the contact name to the number and then have to decipher who the number belongs to later.

David Pogue, the technology writer for the New York Times, abbreviated NYT, says that the iPhone 3G's GPS sensor is too small to enable voice guided turn by turn instructions, but worked fine muted to show decently accurate positioning through the phone's "Maps" application, which uses Google Maps technology. According to Pogue, Apple had said "iPhone’s G.P.S. antenna is much too small to emulate the turn-by-turn navigation of a G.P.S. unit for a vehicle, for example."

I don't know how much I buy Apple's position on GPS via the iPhone 3G. Apple had previously stated in its user agreement that prohibits the use of voice guided GPS. If Cupertino doesn't want third party developers to release software for the unit, they should just say so for fear of liabilities should consumers get into a wreck. However, with GPS and aGPS onboard, the device sounds very capable of getting voice guidance.

If you haven't been following iPhone news, Rogers Wireless is one of the few carriers not offering an unlimited plan for the iPhone. Internet sources have stated that Rogers feels that this is best because it will end up saving consumers money as the carrier wouldn't need to charge more for unlimited data that many of its consumers wouldn't need or use.

In response to the high cost of data and the lack of an unlimited plan, potential iPhone users created a petition to Rogers for an unlimited plan. Furthermore, it seems that Apple may be hearing the cries of Canadians wanting unlimited mobile internet according to the internet blog smithereens.

The blog cited that Apple has taken action against Rogers. Smithereens is stating that Apple is diverting iPhone shipments intended for Rogers for the initial July 11 launch date to Europe.

This is a rumor for now, but it is interesting that Gizmodo is reporting that a corporate version of the iPhone may be coming out of Cupertino that has a sliding keyboard, not unlike the TyTN II and the Touch Pro. According to the reports obtained by Giz, the reason for this may be that Apple wants to make inroads with enterprise sales.

This seems not too likely as Cupertino likes simple and clean industrial design and builds its products mostly for the consumer and productions market. Would a sliding physical keyboard give enough reason to make you reconsider purchasing the Apple flagship phone?

iPhone-Hacks.com has posted up a sumary of a new app that promises ubiquitous VoIP on the iPhone. iCall is a newly announced app coming out on Apple’s App Store. It promises seamless call switching between VoIP via WiFi and regular calls. There will be no hacking involved, they are fully approved Apple developer. iCall has a two tier system with a free version and a ‘pro’ version with added features. iCall is their own service provider so don’t expect to use this application with any of your current VoIP plans like Vonage. It will be interesting to see how this will compare with other services competeing for the iPhone VoIP market. Like the previously released RingFree. Here is their very short FAQ: 1. We are part of the Apple iPhone developer program. This is not an application for you naughty jail breakers 2. We are not using any undocumented API calls. We are following every rule that developers must follow. 3. No, you can not have a copy. We are not physically capable of distributing the application to any phones except our development phones.
