slashdot has posted a burb about the possbile cause of 3G issues on the new iPhone.
Quote:
"Richard Windsor of Nomura published a research note… Tuesday singling out the iPhone 3G’s chipset, made by Infineon, as the probable culprit for the reception problems we reported on Monday. The dropped calls, service interruptions, and abrupt network switches experienced by iPhone 3G users reminded Windsor of similar complaints five years ago, when 3G phones were first launched in Europe. ‘We believe that these issues are typical of an immature chipset and radio protocol stack where we are almost certain that Infineon is the 3G supplier,’ Windsor wrote. ‘This is not surprising as the Infineon 3G chipset solution has never really been tested in the hands of users. Some people will not experience these problems as it is only in areas where the radio signal weakens that the immaturity of the stack really shows.’"

One of the things Apple is most famous for is their
Reality Distortion Field or RDF. The video below is another perfect example of how they achieve this. The video shows the Apple "Unslow" commercial showing how fast everything on the iPhone 3G is, side-by-side with a real-life video of a user performing same tasks that were performed in the commercial.
As you can see, the real world is nowhere near as fast as Apple's advertising. On a positive note, Apple is no longer using
big hands to make the iPhone look smaller.

Back when the Apple iPhone 1.0 was released last year, all third party applications had to exist online. Of course, this year, the App Store was unveiled. One of the things that was amusing to me is that with mobile Safari, you could view web sites as their look in the PC world. However, all the iPhone apps (which were simply web site urls) were created for a small screen.
That being said, there are some great "iPhone 1.0 apps" (or Web 2.0...I get so confused with all the jargon) that function nicely on ALL mobile devices with Internet browsing capabilities. There are literally hundreds of apps available. I have included a few sites that house the majority of them.
iPhoneWidgetList.com
iPhoneApplicationList.com
iPhoneAppr.com
Some of the "apps" work great and some not-so-much, due to the fact they were built for the iPhone and some of the phones native features. Some of my favorites are Hangman and the NFL Schedule. I'm sure you find a few that enhance your mobile life.

The
Iris Browser that we had reported earlier, which is based on the same WebKit standards that Safari and Mobile Safari for the iPhone is based upon, is now coming to Windows Mobile. The release is still in beta at the moment, and you can register with the
developer to get a cab download direct to your mobile device.
I haven't tried out the browser as a friend of mine is borrowing my Tilt at the moment. However,
msmobiles is reporting that the page rendering is very similar to the iPhone, which is great as the iPhone has one of the best browsing experiences out there sans Flash. Also, pages seemed to render a bit slower than they would on Safari according to the report.
Iris comes to Windows Mobile at a time when browsing standards are improving significantly. Its major competitors are
Opera Mobile, which supports web protocols like Flash, and the
SkyFire browser, which s also supports a variety of web standards with the major difference being webpages are cached and sent from SkyFire servers to the user's handheld.

Bring your own phone and you don't have to sign a two-year service agreement to receive post-paid (monthly) rate plans on T-Mobile's network. According to
Gear Diary, all of Big Pink's calling plans and features, including MyFaves and mobile to mobile, are included if they are included with the regular plan on contract. If you don't have an existing unlocked or T-Mobile compatible handset, you can purchase one for the full retail, un-subsidized price and qualify for the bring your own phone promotion.
The wireless landscape in the US has changed from trying to sell new customers on the plan and phone as most people who want a cell phone already have one. Instead, carriers are now trying to poach customers from rival networks or try to sell other bundled services to existing customers, including mobile data and messaging plans. This move will allow T-Mobile to sign up disgruntled GSM customers from rival AT&T and convince them that if their phones are unlocked, they can sign onto T-Mobile's network risk-free with an easy exit strategy.
Also, this will make the carriers immediately profitable from the date of acquiring the customer as the firm won't have to ...

Technology communism is here, and the charge has been led by Apple with its tight control on software, hardware, approved accessories, and third-party applications that have been certified for use on its machines. In fact, the control that Apple exerts on its ecosystem is so strong that I would deem it technology communism. It regulates what applications get approved through the application store, and who can use its mark with the "Made for iPod" certification. The integration between software and hardware, focus on industrial design, and developing for the user experience has been a successful strategy for Apple, a strategy that Microsoft has followed with its Zune portable media players. In fact, Microsoft has been alluding to Apple's success without mentioning the fruit company and its notorious products in its 10K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), according to a story ran by
Apple Insider. So how does Microsoft move forward with its Windows Mobile strategy given its current modus operandi has been laissez-faire? It already has the muscle strength and have been met with success with the vertically integrated model with the XBox gaming platform and to a degree with the Zune.

More than ever, Microsoft can play the "way have more choices" card when faced with growing iPhone 3G sales. If you head over to the
Windows Mobile website, you'll notice a theme that's been present before, but is now stronger than ever: Windows Mobile is about choice. In what appears to be an effort to discount the iPhone, the Windows Mobile website emphasizes the 20+ 3G phone choices available for the platform. It also mentions that a carrier switch isn't needed since WinMo phones can be found on just about every carrier now.
Sure, allowing virtually any company or carrier to create phones for Windows Mobile can lead to different user experiences and a general lack of control (over software updates, bug fixes, etc), but it also allows for huge scalability, and, yes, lots of choices. That's why last fiscal quarter, there were
18 million Windows Mobile licenses handed out.

With HTC and Nokia phones getting good reviews on build qualities, software instabilities aside, Apple has a lot of catching up to do with the second generation of its phone release dubbed iPhone 3G. The Cupertino, California company received high praises for the aluminum-backed first generation of iPhone but the 3G version switches from metal to plastic. With that comes some growing pains. Better reception was the outcome, but with it comes cracking plastics.
Users on
Apple's forum noted that the cracks occur mostly on the white iPhone 3G model (available in 16 GB capacity). It is unclear whether or not the black model (available in 8 and 16 GB capacities) has the same defect because the small, hairline fractures would be harder to see on the black. Users say that the crack, along with collecting dust, dirt, and other debris makes it more visible on the white plastic.
The photo from
Engadget Mobile, reposted below, shows cracks either around the headphone jack, the silent switch and around the volume controls, and on the bottom near the synchronization port. However, users on Apple's forums and other forums have noted cracks on the back surface ...

Brandon had shown us
how to play Nintendo games for those old school retro flashback moments on a Windows Mobile device, but how about a new way to play?
Gizmodo reported that the jailbroken iPhone can play NES (Nintendo) games as well, but with a different way to control the game.
Rather than pressing the buttons to move left, right, up or down, games may also be controlled with the accelerometer. Tilting the device left will move Mario forward in Super Mario Brothers. Of course, users can also use the virtual controller on the iPhone's screen with multi-touch. Since upcoming HTC devices, including the
Touch Diamond and the forthcoming
Touch Pro will have an accelerometer, will a developer port this feature over? Users can opt for tilt and control or use the hardware buttons on Windows Mobile.
One thing that the iPhone and Nintendo Wii have done is to redefine the gaming experience with a new way to interact with and control devices. With the high technologies that will be going into upcoming Windows Mobile devices, perhaps we should re-think of how games should be developed and make Windows Mobile a viable ...

Brandon had commented on how great the potential is for the
App Store on the iPhone, despite its initial
woes as Apple's initial foray into supporting native applications on the iPhone rather than just web applications rendered through the Safari browser. The one thing that I noticed about the App Store is that the bulk of applications are priced between $2.99 and $9.99 with many notable freeware and some useable apps at $0.99. Many Windows Mobile application are priced between $10 and $30. Even still, some titled offered on multiple platforms by the same software house is priced differently, with Windows Mobile and Palm titles costing more than the iPhone/iPod Touch counterparts. This holds true for popular titles such as Ilium eWallet, which retails for $30 on Windows Mobile versus $9.99 through Apple's App Store. SplashID is $9.99, but adding the desktop synchronization component brings the cost of ownership on par to the Windows Mobile counterpart.
Also, games seem to be cheaper on the iPhone, with most "advanced" titles with good graphics and polish costing $5-$10, including titles such as Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart, Texas Hold Em, Scrabble, Tetris, and Super Monkey Ball. Contrast that with ...
