Although Apple, Inc. is going to finally allow developers to release approved applications for the iPhone and iPod touch, according to an unconfirmed report the rules for this will be very stringent.

Apple has just admitted it's going to miss its self-imposed February deadline to releasing the tools that developers will need to create of native programs for the iPhone and iPod touch, but not by much.

Apple, Inc. has released a firmware update for the iPhone and iPod touch, and while this definitely takes care of a few bugs, it might also pave the way for one of the most significant changes yet to these devices.

Google keeps track of what types of mobile devices use its search service, and company executives were recently surprised to discover that those with an Apple iPhone were at the top of the list by a wide margin.

StyleTap, the company that develops a Palm OS environment for Windows Mobile devices, has posted a video of an experimental version of StyleTap running on a iPod Touch. According to the company, the video is more of a proof of concept and not an actual product at this time. StyleTap is also not saying definitively whether or not they will release a official version.

In the video (embedded after the break) the Touch is shown running a variety of native Palm OS applications. Bobby Chew, a developer for StyeTap says "This experimental version can run ARMlets and because of the screen size, uses hi-res (double density) bitmaps and fonts. If Apple's security and application installation and distribution scheme isn't too restrictive, it looks like StyleTap will be able to run the same applications on the iPhone/Touch, Symbian and Windows Mobile/CE platforms."

Steve Jobs has used part of his Macworld Expo keynote address to unveil a pair of system software updates for the iPhone and iPod touch, as well as the iTunes movie rental service.

With the Macworld tradeshow kicking off Tuesday, rumors of what will -- and won't -- be announced are flying thick and fast. According to one report, the Newton-like device Apple is supposedly working on won't be unveiled at this year's show, but something is definitely in the air.
