[Note: You might want to first read my review of Jonathan Zittrain’s book to give this essay some context.] Jonathan Zittrain must have been smiling as he read Leander Kahney’s excellent Wired cover story this month, “How Apple Got Everything Right By Doing Everything Wrong.” In a sense, the article vindicates Zittrain’s thesis in The Future of the Internet--And How to Stop It. Again, in his provocative book, Zittrain argues that, for a variety of reasons, the glorious days of the generati

There is little doubt that Apple intends to follow up the current iPhone with a version that offers 3G wireless networking. The only question is when this will happen. In the last few days, a number of industry sources have shed some light on this situation.

Tom Bihn just sent me their latest and greatest bag to review: The Ristretto Messenger. It is a small bag designed to fit the Lenovo X300, Apple MacBook, and Apple MacBook Air. When the Dell Latitude XT gets here, I'll see if the XT can fit inside ( fingers crossed). The Motion F5, unforunately won't fit - it's a tad too wide. The Lenovo X61, with the 4-cell battery, doesn't fit in the padded cell, but it does fit quite nicely in the pocket next to the cell. Just from the few moments I've h

So we know that the next iPhone will have 3G, we know that it will have Exchange support, and we know that it can be loaded up with third-party applications, so that if there’s something you wish your iPhone could do that it currently cannot, chances are, someone, somewhere, will make an application to fill the void.

If you haven't heard, there is also rumor that it will have a front-facing camera, finally paving the way for video telephony in this country, and possibly encouraging more sales of the iPhone once people realize the utility of video teleconferencing (that’s another discussion that I’m sure many would have an opinion on). Further, the latest from BGR speculates that the next version of the iPhone may sport an OLED screen, which would not only have better contrast and brightness than the current screen, but it will allow for lower power consumption (needed to counteract the power-hungry 3G) and a thinner body.

If all of these rumors are true, the next gen iPhone will be an ultra compelling piece of hardware that will cause a lot of current users that use other platforms to migrate to ...

Microsoft's Specialized Devices and Applications Group has the largest group of Mac developers outside of Apple. That group produces the very profitable Office suite for Mac. According Fortune.com they have been looking at the iPhone SDK to determine the viability of building applications for the iPhone. Microsoft's TellMe subsidiary is also looking at the SDK to implement voice recognition applications.

Will it be long before we see Office and Voice Command on the iPhone, probably not...Could this be another blow (after the ActiveSync licensing) to the Windows Mobile team?

I think it is just another wake up call. Time to get innovative.

According to this Forbes article, it will be difficult for the Apple iPhone to become popular with businesses.

In response to Apple's announcement to add Exchange syncing to it's 2.0 iPhone firmware:

"It's like if you want to be a great baseball player. You don't just go out and buy a bat and glove and think you're done. They've got to learn how enterprises work," says Mort Rosenthal

"We think the iPhone will continue to appeal to a niche willing to pay for the sizzle of leading-edge technologies," says Sean Magee, senior vice president of information technology at Ricoh Americas Corp. "While the touchscreen, overall presentation, data management and navigation are cool, at the end of the day it is just an overpriced PDA with a lot of challenges in front of it."

It's all speculation right now, but do you think the iPhone has what it takes to work with businesses?

Since the iPhone was released, there have been several keyboards released that attempted to imitate the large iPhone keyboard. Dasar is now releasing one that takes it to a new level. ThumbKey is a keyboard where you don't have to accurately type you want to say. Instead, you can tap in the general vicinity of the character(s) you are trying to type, hit spacebar, and the keyboard software will attempt to decipher what you had intended to type.

ThumbKey is available for $25 in English, French, and Hebrew at this time. Since this is a soft input keyboard, it is designed for Windows Mobile devices with touchscreen, which should cover Windows Mobile Professional and Classic.

SlingPlayer is going to get an update soon for Windows Mobile devices and the S60 platform. S60 is the interface that runs on top of the Symbian operating system, with the other interface being UIQ. SlingPlayer may come to UIQ as well to support both Symbian platforms.

The makers of Sling are also looking into an iPhone release as well according to Gizmodo.

The updated version that is coming to Windows Mobile will be more optimized and will be released for both touchscreen Windows Mobile Professional and non-touchscreen Windows Mobile Standard devices soon.

If you want an iPhone in the U.S., you've got two choices: use AT&T's wireless service, or risk unlocking your phone to use T-Mobile (the only other American provider that's compatible with the iPhone's SIM-based GSM design). And with AT&T's exclusivity contract in effect until 2012, we'll be well into the next presidential election cycle before that changes. But maybe there's a loophole in the form of the iPod Touch--and its eventual successor.

According to The Boy Genius Report, Apple just filed patent for a touchscreen clamshell flip phone. Dubbed as the iPhone Flip in this early patent drawing, the phone has two touchscreens on the interior that are context-sensitive and an exterior touchscreen, making a total of three touchscreens.

I wonder when and if Apple will use haptic touch technology so that users feel a response every time they touch a button, thus creating the feel of a hardware button press.

...NOT!

PocketPCMag.com has posted an article highlighting some of Vito Technology's new Windows Mobile applications that supposedly make Windows Mobile easier to use.

In reality, it's pretty obvious from looking at the screen captures, that these programs do the opposite.

The interface is completely foreign, you've lost access to the familiar start menu, minimize button, soft-key menus, and software input panel. The applications don't fit in with the standard Windows Mobile interface, thus causing an unbalanced and uncomfortable aesthetic.

As if that wasn't enough, take a look at the home screen for GoodWin below. The only thing that's instantly understandable on that screen is the clock and it's there twice. Furthermore, there is no text to explain the locked screen, so even if you figure out what some of the icons at the top mean, you won't be able to do anything until you figure out how to unlock the screen.

Some of these software developers really need to learn more about usability and interface design.

Dear Apple: My iPhone makes a good paper weight. Sure, it does a lot of cool stuff like browse the web like a real computer, and sure it's easy and fun to use, but it's useless to me without Exchange support.
