cool app I shared a video of the other day? Well, it’s here! When I dust off my iPhone, this will be the 1st app I give a try. Well, maybe second… I love illium Software and want to check out their new game, Kings Corners. That’s why we’ve added voice search to Google Mobile App for the iPhone — and made it super easy to use. Once the app is running, you don’t have to tap any buttons. Just hold the iPhone to your ear, wait for the beep, and say what you’re looking for. For instance, last week w

IBM’s lawyers, that is). What’s been turned up? The iPhone’s software is overseen by Scott Forstall (Senior Vice President, iPhone Software), and, at a technical level, Bertrand Serlet (Senior Vice President, Software Engineering). There is no such division between hardware and software with the traditional (pre-Touch) iPods. The story I’ve heard is that at the outset of Apple’s iPhone initiative, there was a heated debate within Apple as to what OS should be used. Forstall and Serlet pushed f

A few of my friends were talking about the iPhone and one of them mentioned Flash as an advantage for Windows Mobile. However, I think Flash is becoming less relevant on the mobile space, as it appears in its current incarnation. FlashLite 3.1 is the equivalent of Flash 8.x for the desktop. While this is miles ahead of Flash Player 7 for Pocket PC and FlashLite 2.x, FlashLite 3.1 cannot render and play embedded Flash content that was created using Flash 9 or above.

What does all that geek lingo mean? Well in layman's term, FlashLite 3.1, as Steve Jobs had eloquently bashed in referencing Flash for the iPhone, doesn't really work and the full desktop version of Flash is too memory intensive.

I had installed FlashLite 3.1 on my Touch Pro for use with Opera 9.5. Opera could play embedded YouTube videos and videos on YouTube.com played, but videos from sites like the New York Times or streaming videos through CBS.com did not work. My Grand Central voicemail account, which utilizes Flash to play voicemail messages wouldn't even let me log on. This makes FlashLite 3.1 even less relevant on HTC devices as HTC already includes ...

Review: Why Android is for me and the G1 isn’t Posted by Andrew Nusca @ 9:19 am Categories: iPod Touch, Apple, iPhone 3G, iPhone, iPod, T-Mobile, G1 Tags: T-Mobile G1, Phone, T-Mobile, Cell Phone, HTC-made G1, Telecom & Utilities, Andrew Nusca For me, when it comes to cell phones, it’s a marriage of convenience. Treo Disappoints in Warranty Reliability ReportAccording to a newly released study by SquareTrade, an independent aftermarket warranty provider for consumer electronics, the Apple iPhone is less than half as likely to fail as phones from Apple's two biggest competitors - BlackBerry and Palm.

The study, based on data from over 15,000 phones, finds that only 5.6% of iPhone users reported a device malfunction in the first year of ownership, compared with 11.9% of BlackBerry owners and a staggering 16.2% of Treo owners. The trend is projected to continue through the second year of ownership, with iPhone maintaining its status as the most reliable of the three.

Seskimo...sounds dirty.

(Credit: Seskimo)

Last week, I reported on how to make your own iPhone stand using a simple binder clip. I'm still a huge fan of all things free, but if you watch a lot of videos on your iPhone and suffer from a disease that forces you to spend money, get your stand from the folks at Seskimo.

Their foldable "Bat Rest" is roughly the same size as a credit card and is easily adjustable for different viewing angles. It's also very useful for disarming criminals if thrown with trained precision. It comes in three colors (black, white, and translucent) and only costs $3.99, which is pretty darn close to free. Heck, buy two from the Web site and they'll throw in shipping for free! And if for some reason you harbor prejudice against our bat-friends, Seskimo also makes a different stand shaped like a set of bullhorns.

More pictures after the jump, thanks to Barrier Bloor for the link.

If you like the Weather widget on the iPhone, you can get the same Widget now on Windows Mobile. The application is available as a freeware right now. You can download it from freewarepocketpc.net. At this time, only weather data from one location is possible. Hopefully that will change in future revisions. Weather data is taken from weather.com and Yahoo weather.

According to MobileTopSoft, a Canalys report states that Windows Mobile ranks fourth among smartphone sales in the third quarter of 2008. First up is Symbian, led by Nokia. Apple and RIM round out the second and third place spots with the iPhone and BlackBerry devices. Motorola and its partners took fourth place in the number of smartphones sold with the Windows Mobile operating system. The number of overall smartphones sold did increase by 28% and Microsoft actually fared pretty well:

Despite being overtaken by Apple globally in Q3, Microsoft has increased its share of the smart phone market year-on-year, helped by the volumes being achieved by vendors like HTC and Samsung in particular. With Android about to be thrown into the mix, Canalys expects that 2009 will see Symbian remain on top, but that it will be fairly closely fought between the other major smart phone operating systems, presenting operators and application developers with some challenges around where they deploy their resources.

If you're interested, you should read the full Canalys report

Despite the gloomy economic picture and the problems being experienced by some of the leading mobile handset vendors, global shipments of smart phones hit a new peak of just under 40 million units in Q3 2008, according to the latest estimates mobile analyst firm Canalys. This means smart phones now comprise around 13% of the total mobile phone market, up from 11% last quarter.

The introduction of the iPhone 3G in July and Apple's expansion into many more countries helped propel the vendor to second place globally, taking it above RIM in the quarter and resulting in higher shipments than for all the Microsoft-based smart phones combined. In total worldwide smartphone shipments hit a new peak of 39.9 million in Q3 2008.

To thwart threats of competition from the likes of Research in Motion with its BlackBerry devices and Apple with the iPhone, Microsoft and LG has entered into a strategic alliance. According to MobileTopSoft, it seems that the alliance will cover areas such as: R&D, marketing, applications and services. Coupled with LG's renewal of its Windows Mobile license for Windows Mobile 7 when it is due out, Microsoft is aiming to launch a more integrated design with software and hardware.

Hands are totally overrated.

(Credit: Jeff Staple)

I hate buying accessories for my iPhone; it's totally counter-intuitive. You're saying that I need to buy OTHER stuff to make the phone I just bought more useful? It doesn't make sense to me, and it doesn't make sense to Jeff Staple of Staple Design either.

Check out this iPhone/iPod Touch cradle he made out of a simple binder clip that (let's be real here) you can easily liberate from your company's supply closet! It might take a bit of tweaking with pliers to get the wire to stand up on its own, but I'd rather do it myself than give away more of my hard-earned money! Actually, now that I'm thinking about it, don't get one, I'm about to make these by the dozen and and sell them all on eBay; watch the first ones go up tonight. How does $10.99 + tax sound? Race you to the patent office!

More pics after the break.

These are independent of the actual device: non-smartphones are also treated to the Signal gadget; additional applications are not added per default:

After much leaks, delays, and some anticipation, iPhone users are finally beginning to get a text message from AT&T about how to hop onto the carrier's WiFi networks for free, including WiFi at Starbucks location. Seen as a goodwill gesture to some, the reality is that AT&T probably wants iPhone users to get off the mobile data network, which is more costly, and move them onto WiFi whenever available. Complete instructions can be found on the AT&T WiFi page:

iPhone users, get started with Wi-Fi

-Activate Wi-Fi from the settings icon on your iPhone
-Select "attwifi" from the list of available networks
-Enter your 10-digit mobile number and check the box to agree to the Acceptable Use Policy. Tap 'continue'
-You will receive a text message from AT&T with a secure link to the AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot. You will not be charged for the text message.
-The SMS link will only be valid for 24 hours at the location it was requested. Another request must be submitted when using another hotspot location.
-Open the text message and tap on the link for 24-hour access to the AT&T Wi-Fi hotspot

The method is somewhat clunky, but uses ...

Well, this should provide little reassurance for AT&T subscribers who are with a mobile data plan. According to The Boy Genius Report, AT&T has yet to release a tethering plan for the iPhone 3G due to worries that the network may not be able to handle capacity. Tethering plans have been offered on many platforms across a variety of different devices from Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and BlackBerry on the wireless network. The Boy Genius Report is also speculating that only a small number of iPhone users will opt to tether. If this is true, then that doesn't bode well for confidence in the network.

The netbook niche market was probably popularized by the EeePC, a small laptop replacement that omitted non-necessities like an optical drive to keep the price low, hovering at around $500. According to AppleInsider, Apple is softening up on its denial of entering the low-cost, ultra-portable market.

CEO Steve Jobs stated on the latest earnings conference call that Apple does not know how to make a cheap $500 device that doesn't suck. This leaves analysts speculating that Apple may design a premium ultra-portable device at around $700. Furthermore, Apple is stating that it is observing the "nascent" netbook market, and will have some interesting ideas when the market matures. Many are believing that this device will fill the gap between the iPhone and the MacBook notebook computers. Ste Jobs has said that for many basic functions, the iPhone is a capable netbook replacement.

The so-called "MacBook Touch" shown below is a rendering of one possible device on Gizmodo.

A company called OLO Computer is showing a concept device that runs a full version of OS X off of a docked iPhone, as seen below. Because the company's website is slim on details, we can only speculate on how it works, or how it would work. Since the iPhone is a closed platform, being able to utilize it as a full-fledged OS X device would be quite difficult and would present many challenges.

This concept is different than the much-condemned (and canceled) Palm Fole0 and recently-discounted Celio REDFLY, which attempt to bring a big screen and laptop-like input to Palm and Windows Mobile OS, respectively.

Thanks to iTWire for the tip.

We were all in agreement that the video of Windows Mobile running on an iPhone seemed...suspicius. Today, msmobiles put up a video showing again, Windows Mobile running on an iPhone, and this time, it seems more believable: the keyboard doesn't work, things are slow to load, and many visual elements don't render properly (you know, problems you'd expect when porting Windows Mobile software to a device not made to support it). We wonder if these two occurrences are related. And because msmobiles hasn't posted a source of their story, it's hard to trace the origin.
